1966 Convertible Fuel Tank

Got kind of a stupid question.  To make it short, the fuel tank is out of my '66 convertible and I've noticed on my car that the fuel tank opening was 2.5" closer to the drivers side (measured from the inner edge of the frame rail  on each side to the edge of the tank hole opening on each side) than the passenger side. I've got a replacement 22 gal tank and it fits in the opening. I've had the rear of the car replaced (frame rails from just aft of the differential, new quarters, trunk floor, tail light panel, etc. and I was putting it back together when I noticed this today.  I think I already know the answer, but is this "offset" normal?

Re: 1966 Convertible Fuel Tank

I just went out and measured my 22 gallon tank that's in our 66 HT.  The center of the filler opening seems to be offset to the left by about 1/2 inch.  I measured from the tank pinch weld to the center of the filler at the tank.  I suspect you are just seeing a tank offset that was designed into the car for exhaust clearance.  I just didn't have the steam to crawl under our car to check that out.  Is the filler on the tank centered with the filler hole in the tail light panel?  Mine is within about 1/2 inch.

And...welcome to the forum.  It's a great place and I think you'll be glad you found it.  As for your fuel tank, wish I could be more helpful.

Re: 1966 Convertible Fuel Tank

I have a 22 gallon tank in my 65.  From the driver's side of the edge of the tank (the upward bulge) to the centerline of the filler neck is 15-1/2" and from the passenger side it's 14-1/2".

Re: 1966 Convertible Fuel Tank

Dropped in the tank and the filler neck.  Everything lined up almost dead on (whoo of relief).  I guess the only issue I have now is fixing the interference between the D/S rear bumper guard bracket vertical mounting bolt and the tank when installed. When the shop did the frame and sheetmetal work, they didn't drill the mounting holes for these brackets.  I was in the process of installing the brackets when I noticed this.
Guys, thanks for all your help.  Seriously.

Re: 1966 Convertible Fuel Tank

Yes, the offset is normal and the 65-70 tanks fit it perfectly.
