My mock up of my exhaust

So on another thread, I asked some questions of how folks were connecting the H-pipe to tri-Y headers and I mentioned that the kit I got worked from the mufflers back but the intermediate and H-pipe are too far off.  So I used some 2" PVC to mock up the pipe from the header to the muffler.  My intention is to glue this up and then take it to a muffler shop to have it bent up in 2-1/4".  My car isn't a driver yet.  Below are some pics.  I'm trying to tuck the pipe up in the tunnel.  I have at least 1-1/2" clearance everywhere.  Anybody see any problems or have a suggestion?  Thanks.

Re: My mock up of my exhaust

You will be better off just taking the car to the muffler shop. Leave the PVC in place to show them what you want. I doubt that they would get it exact just trying to copy what you made. When they have the whole car they can fit it back in exactly.

Well that would be my preference but the car is not a driver yet.

Re: My mock up of my exhaust

Dang I have to save a copy of that picture for my files!

Do like Ramses.  Have the car towed to the muffler shop.  In the first couple of years when he put the V8 in that car, it had more miles on it being towed to the muffler shop and back than actual drive miles.

I must say your efforts are innovative and unique, but I agree with others that taking it to the shop would be alot easier.  One thing to consider is their tube bender can only place bends so close together.  Doesn't look like your design would be a problem in that regard, but something to consider.  The muffler shop guy will typically use a piece of welding rod to mock up the routing of the tubing, then try to duplicate the rod's bends in real world tubing.  Same thing as you are doing but probably alot faster and easier.  You could have him mock it up to your satisfaction, then bend and install the pipes.  You could also do it at home.  I have used 3/16" brake tubing for that type purpose before.

It's probably just the flash, but doesn't it look like he has a pvc muffler mounted?

Actually it's the same method used by some to build the mockup for custom headers. Found it when I looked for inspiration on how to build my own turbo headers, never used the approach myself though. Here's a YouTube screenshot:

Actually that's exactly where I got the idea.  I saw it on a site where I bought some ss bends when I had to modify my tri-Y's to fit my GT40P heads (pleanty of clearance now).  In fact, I was planning on using screws too so I could reuse the PVC on the other side.  I'll post the results when I get it bent up.  I'll be looking for that famous thumbs-up

Re: My mock up of my exhaust

Well, I had to set it aside for a while but just finished it.  I had the pipes bent and they came out spot on:

I welded flanges on the muffler side as well as the header side so I could drop the pipes easily if I needed to pull the tranny.  The pipes extend an inch past the flange on the muffler side so no gaskets are needed there:

The pipes are 2-14".  I used a 2" hole saw to cut the ends on the H-pipe and the holes where it gets welded:

End result (high temp paint over the welds):

Installed.  Had to relocate the E-brake spring:

I welded a tab for the spring to the subframe connectors (Daze's pattern).  Looks like the spring hits the pipe, but it clears by an inch:

Curious...what are you using for mufflers?

I'm using these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00029J3BG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

They seemed to fit well with the through-the-valence tailpipes I got from CJ Pony.  Not so with CJ Pony's intermediate pipes and H-pipe.  The reason I made up my own intermediate pipes and H-pipe was because the ones I got from CJ Pony didn't fit - weren't even close.  There was no way their H-pipe was going to fit, even though it was advertised to fit tri-Y headers like the ones I have.  They didn't buy that and I had to pay shipping back to them.  I won't be doing business w/ them again.

Re: My mock up of my exhaust

I came real close to going with those mufflers. If you research how they are made internally, they look almost identical to Mustang Steve's quiet flow's he has now but with a shorter case. Many reviews describe them as one of the quietest performance mufflers. I ended up going with dynomax ultra flow. I think you will be happy with them.
