Im glad I found this site again. I used to be registered here about 13 years ago when I had my last 66 Mustang. I had to sell it but now I just imported another one into the UK and this one is for keeps.
Looking forward to finding lots of tips etc but my first question is, will the front brakes off a 1983 Mustang 5.0 fit onto my 66?
Im sure they do not but I just got offered some and I though that this would be the best place to check.
Thanks for any help.

Welcome back !
No, the Fox Mustang brakes will not work on your 66. For one thing, they are four lug and second, they are smaller diameter, more undesirable brakes. There alot better options.

Thanks for your reply. They did look a bit small however these ones are 5 lug? what gives with these?

As a fellow 66 owner and soon to be doing a disc brake swap. I can tell you there is no shortage of affordable kits on the market. Not really worth dumpster diving in my opinion. Most are all inclusive. Might spend a few hundred more but you'll save time and peace of mind.

Some Fox cars may have been converted to SN195 5 lug brakes. Unless they are the COBRA 5 lug brakes, they are not really a good fit.

Keep in mind what type and size rims you are going to use. Different brake kits require different rim sizes.

Thanks for the answers.
What brake kit are we reccommending these days?
I am visiting SanFransisco again this year and I can put them on my shopping list.
Very dificult to pick parts up here in the UK. Well not difficult but outrageously expensive!

If you want to run 17" wheels, I have kits utilizing original FORD parts on anything that wears. 94-04 COBRA 13" or 2005-current Mustang GT 12.5" or 13.2 brakes. There are other kits such as CSRP has that are a little over $500 for the fronts, but with 11" rotors.

I put Steves GT discs on the front of my 66 and just finished adding a power booster. If you're gonna run 17" wheels its the way to go.

I'm probably going to run 15" Cragar wheels on mine as they are available here and as a bonus I like them.
Tell me about Steve's disc kit. It is the whole kit?
My car has power brakes but uses Drums. I take it I need a completely different booster from the one fitted. It just happens that the one fitted is brand new but not fitted by me.

You need to run 17s to use Steves GT or Cobra kit but its a great way to go. It uses all Ford Parts and the instructions make it a pretty straight forward swap. Check out his products on his site. One piece of advice, if you go with his kit get your booster and mc from him. I didn't and it caused some minor problems for me.That being said I'm very happy with the end result.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
