Brake options for 65/66 Spindles with big axle?

Hi Steve-
Will all of the various front brake brackets that you offer fit the new 65/66 spindles with the big axle that you also sell?

If so, is there a reason to go with one set of brakes over another?  I'm going to be using 17" wheels regardless of the front brakes I go with and Explorer rear discs.

Thanks.

Re: Brake options for 65/66 Spindles with big axle?

I carry two versions of 65-66 spindles that fit the cobra and GT brake conversions. One set is stock configuration with larger axle and larger Granada size tie rods. The second set is identical with 1-1/2" lowering made into the spindle.
Brakes function about the same.  GT brakes are alot less expensive and a whole lot easier to come by.

Re: Brake options for 65/66 Spindles with big axle?

Thanks.  Sounds like GT brakes it will be.  On the GT brakes, do those spindles work with both the 05-09 and the 11-13 GT brakes?

Yes, the spindles as well as my GT2008-FT conversion brackets fit the following front brakes.
2005-2010 GT 12.5"
2011-2014 V6 12.5"
2011-2014 GT 13.2" (but this requires 18" wheel in most cases)

Re: Brake options for 65/66 Spindles with big axle?

Thanks!  One more question if you don't mind.  Is there a difference between the '05-10 GT calipers and the 11-14 V6 calipers that makes it worth using one instead of the other?

They are identical.

Re: Brake options for 65/66 Spindles with big axle?

The calipers are the same but the caliper cradle is taller for the 13.2" rotor systems to account for the larger diameter rotor I think so make sure you get cradles that match your chosen rotor size - if you shop around you can probably find nearly new 13.2" take-offs with rotors and all. I also think that the 13.2" system will fit the inside diameter of most 17" wheels but there might not be many wheels with spokes that will clear the calipers as they're fairly bulky on the spoke side. AR TTM fit for sure.

Re: Brake options for 65/66 Spindles with big axle?

All the calipers he asked about are 12.5" brakes and are identical including the caliper mounting bracket.

Sorry, didn't mean to confuse things just wanted to share that the 13.2" parts will probably work with most 17" wheels as far as the diameter is concerned as long as there is spoke clearance but that's an issue with the smaller diameter rotors too I would think since the calipers are the same. Could be that the difference in stopping power between the 12.4" and 13.2" is not really that big of a deal for most folks putting these on older, lighter Stangs though.

Re: Brake options for 65/66 Spindles with big axle?

Hi Steve,
Will my KH disk brakes work with the larger pin spindles? Do I have to change my outer tie rod ends? I was reading some articles about axel failures on the stock 65/66 spindles so I was thinking about upgrading. I open track my car a couple times per year then street drive it the rest of the time.

Yes, the KH disc brakes will fit these spindles.  You will need to change wheel bearings to the A12 and A13 kits instead of A2 and A6 as currently used.  This will mate the rotors to the larger axle.

On tie rods, you have two choices if your car has manual steering.  1. Convert to Granada outer tie rods or 2. install a pair of my TRB-65GR tie rod adapters.

Re: Brake options for 65/66 Spindles with big axle?

In regards to the tie rods; 1) Does using the Granada outer tie rods affect the steering geometry?, 2) Are your adapters like a shim which mates the smaller tie rod pin to the larger hole in the spindle? Can you post a picture of your adapter?

Ok, I checked out the tie-rod bushings. Do the ball joints also need bushings?

The ball joints are direct fit, same as originals, so no adapters needed.

Re: Brake options for 65/66 Spindles with big axle?

I am still trying to figure out which brakes to go with.  I can't seem to find a decent set of 12.5" takeoffs, 13.2" takeoffs are readily available but "might" not fit in the 17" wheels that I am planning on using and then I came across the below "cobra style" 13" kit made by SVE.  The price seems reasonable, but I'm not familiar with SVE.  Anyone have any insight on this kit?

P.s.

Steve- I am going to need to order the spindles and related bits from you in the next week or two.

Re: Brake options for 65/66 Spindles with big axle?

Those SVE parts are Chinese copies of the Cobra calipers.

You can get rebuilt Cobra calipers with brackets from RockAuto.
ORIGINAL REBUILT COBRA CALIPERS
Go to rockauto.com
(2) BRR54 rotors
(1) BR12B pads
(1) BRCF86 Left caliper w/bracket NO cobra letters
(1) BRC-87 Right caliper w/bracket NO cobra letters

I found all the part numbers you listed with the exception of the calipers.  They did have some re manufactured Raybestos front calipers and Motorcraft rear calipers, but no Motorcraft front calipers.  Do these go in and out of stock periodically?

Re: Brake options for 65/66 Spindles with big axle?

Still no luck finding the Cobra calipers at Rock Auto.  They pop up every now and then on eBay but who knows what condition they're in.  I came across this SSBC kit.  Other than having the smaller pistons, this doesn't look like a bad option.  Anyone have any experience with this kit?

And then there is this kit too, which might be overkill.

Re: Brake options for 65/66 Spindles with big axle?

I think there is about to be a set of COBRA brakes posted on the swap meet page.

This guy on ebay has new ones for $140 which is a good price.

Thanks for the eBay link, I had not seen those yet. That is a pretty good price.

I think you took Steve's search criteria too literally. He gave you the part numbers of the Motorcraft remanufactured MACH 1 calipers (same caliper, no COBRA name on it). If you search
Rockauto,
FORD,
2004,
Mustang,
4.6L DOHC,
Brakes,
Caliper,
you will find an assortment of remanufactured calipers from a variety of vendors. Rockauto usually has the MACH 1 calipers and only occasionally has COBRA calipers.
