Neutral Switch after a Standard Transmission Conversion

Hi I Have a 1966 Mustang Coupe with a 289 4v (A) Code engine that had a C4 Auto Trans in it I Change it to a Top Loader 4 Speed Trans with Clutch Pedals and everything. My Question is the Two wire plugs in the Engine bay one was for the back up lights and one was for the automatic trans neutral starting switch.is there some thing I have to do for the car to start with these wire plugs now that I converted to a Top Loader 4  Speed trans I also cut theses wires from the C4 auto if I need them. any advice would be Helpful Thank's Gotstang

The 2 wires on the first pic that are red blue you need to follow them up under the dash. That short 2 wire harness should plug into 2 Red/blue wires under the dash. Unplug the 2 wire harness and plug the 2 wires under the dash into each other. This will by-pass the neutral safety switch.


If this forum can't fix it, it isn't broke.

That two wire block, I figured out which two wires are for the tran's park /neutral switch by asking someone to hold the key in start position and tapping them to eachother, listening for starter. Then spliced those two under the dash. For the back up lights, I found the wire under the driver's threshold, traced it and toggled it to the fuse box. (Cool, they toggle into little jet burners in drive, especially at night ) 😀

I wire my neutral safety switch wires thru a toggle switch under the dash. It's my low tech security system

That's a good idea.  I'm not a super fan of not having a clutch switch either with a manual, as you could start the car in gear and it could move.  I might look at adding one to mine.  You could daisy chain it with the security switch too and get both functions.

Go to a boneyard and find an older pickup truck.  Grab the clucth switch (neutral switch) and it's bracket and install it on your Stang.  Stright forward and safe.  Don't just hot wire it. Too dangerous.

67 StangMan where are these neutral saftey switches and bracket located on the older pickup truck and what year of truck am i looking for and is it F150's Im looking for? Thanks Gotstang

I spoke incorrectly.  The clutch safety switch I found was on a mid 90's truck. They all have one. Visit your local boneyard and peek under the dash near the clutch pedal.  Any make should do.  You will have to fabricate a bracket to hold it, but it's an easy set up.

Just get a momentary contact switch from NAPA for around $5.  Beats a trip junk yarding, unless you just like going for the relaxation.  You want a normally ON switch, and rig it so the clutch pedal depresses the switch in the static position of the pedal.  When the pedal is depressed, it lets the switch return to its normal unactivated ON position.

Or just do like us old farts do and remember to depress the clutch pedal before you hit the key.


Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

I almost always remember to put the tranny in neutral before I "far-it". Hold-over-habit from truck driving school.
