it might as well be a 66 mustang.
I've been driving this car daily for over a month so far. I wanted to share a few things i've learned. First old cars are cool and while most people don't give my car a second look, there are those that light up and smile or give a thumbs up out the window when they see the car. Its nice that it brings some joy to them.
Second, there are some problem issues I need to fix and I just have not gotten to it yet. The horn doesn't work, and the left blinker doesn't auto stop. I'm sure its time for new parts to solve those problems.
Third, my self welded exhaust with a dump in front of the axel isn't ideal. I should really replace the exhaust ststem and maybe pay someone this time to do the job so its don't well and will be nice and neat and tidy.
Fourth, I'm sure glad I cut the dash to install the mp3/blutooth/HD radio stereo. Its a great upgrade. I think I want to add a pair of 6x9s in the back package tray some day.
Fifth. Over drive is nice and I really should do that upgrade at some point. I don't enjoy running the rpms that high on the interstate. Luckily for me, I don't have to do it often in the mustang. I know she can take it but I've been spoiled all these years with OD. Would be great to have it on the mustang as well.
Sixth, gas costs haven't been all that bad. I drive the car every day and can baby the mileage but I don't normally do that. The gas bill has been less than the old car so I can't complain to much.
Seven. Rain. The a&& end will break lose if the roads are even a little wet. You have got to be cautious. The heater works well enough to keep the windows clear and the stock whipers are more than able to keep the window clear but with one speed it looks different than the modern car.
Eight, and a big thanks to MustangSteve for this. Power break upgrade to my disc breaks has been a great improvement. Feels like a modern car. Wife loves it as well. some day I should add ABS eh?
Nine. My car is a 40' footer easy and I don't care one bit.
Its not a show car and i don't drive it like one. I have really enjoyed driving the car every day since this stage of my life started. Is it ideal? Maybe not, but it gets the job done. I safely and reliably get to where I need to go. I enjoy the drive. Its usually fun. Not bad for sure a old car. What have you guys learned about your old cars while driving them often? Anything you wish you had upgraded or installed? Anything that you think now, you didn't have to do or install?
Thanks.
Richard.

I have a 66 coupe with the goal one day to use it as a daily driver. I'm still rolling on drums and it's out of commision at the moment. I might replace the entire front end and go rack and pinion so I don't want to do a brake swap just yet. If you want to drive like a modern car you really need to go fuel injection over carberator. Other than that an AC unit is a must before i drive anything in this blast furnace.
Hey I created a bezel for mounting my modern deck into the dash. Had it 3D printed, pretty cool. Trying to finalize a design. Send me a pick of what you've done.

I try and drive my 79 F100 as much as possible, now with the Crown Vic swap completed. I also have exhaust dumping in front of the rear end, tail pipes would be nice, and all of the window fussies are shot, so the glass rattles around alot, and the wind and road noise at 75mph is alittle loud. But I love driving my old truck, oh yea, AC would be nice. I never drive it anywhere that at least one person doesn't comment.

When I bought my first 2+2, it was because I couldent afford a new car. So if I was going to have to drive a used car it was at least going to be a "cool" one.
In the subsequent years Karol has always had the New Car, while I'm on my 4th 2+2.

6sally6 brings up an excellent point about the way your car sounds. Most of us work forever on our cars only to come to sell them one day. AND THE ONLY TIME YOU HAVE EVER HEARD YOUR CAR BEING DRIVEN IS WHEN THE NEW OWNER DRIVES IT AWAY !!! And then... it is kind of late to enjoy. Like sal says... have someone else drive it away so you can hear how it sounds. it will be totally different than what you hear when you are driving it.
I still remember the sound of my 70 fastback being driven off after I sold it.. Ohhhh baby.... Shouldn't have done that... But 3 little girls did enjoy the benefit of the family having some extra money.

Right there with 6sally6 and MS, I have started making my wife drive ours up and down the street in front of me, and have followed her home from a couple cruise ins, it gives you a whole different view.
This is my 66, with the 393 (stroked 351w), AFR's, long tube headers, and open chamber mufflers, 5 speed
And this is the first time I ever herd it going down the road, as the new owner drove away, boy do I miss that car.

I have a 17 year old who would be very happy to "test" drive mine (or yours for that matter). Actually he drove it last night (with me in the car of course). Gets a grin when it squeals the tires as the C4 shifts through the gears.

Novi Rick,
If you are looking for a place to drive, the Backstreet Cruizers have a cruise night in Milan at Wilson Park every Thursday night 6-8pm. Weather permitting.

Hope to see you there,

My son drives my 66 coupe. I bought it for him but he is still in school and has no job so it is in my name. I have tried to raise him as a gearhead as my dad did me. This car has helped a lot. I hear and see it as he drives away frequently and still enjoy the sound of old iron. The grin on his face as he tells me of the latest person that has stopped him to talk about his car is priceless.
