    Helping a friend with his Crate engine and Holley 4160 Carb

    First off, this is a 1968 cheby Camaro. He set his Holley up per Crate engine spec. 32 degrees BTCD at 3000 rpm. Says that it vacuum is 14-15.
    Says engine falters when put into drive despite a high RPM setting on his idle.

    I told him to pull plugs to see if lean or rich.

    Any Holley ideas out there. What else should he be looking at.

    Most new setups need timing finalized before carb tuning. What is initial timing? May need more initial. Total should be more, usually around 36. Be sure valve adjustment is not too tight.

    Sounds like vacuum leak!

    As others requested, need more details ...
    What is the Idle RPM (in neutral)?
    If he is using a vacuum advance distributor, was the line plugged when checking the total timing?
    If it is a vacuum distributor, try leaving the line plugged and place into drive and see what happens.
    Monitor the vacuum when placed in 'drive'.
    Try to keep it running in drive and note the lowest RPM that can be achieved.
    Re: the Holley, what are the idle mixture screws set at?

    65 Fastback, 351W, 5-speed, 4 wheel discs, 9" rear,  R&C Front End.

    Mocha, remember, too, that the Brand X uses manifold vacuum to the distributor, not venture vacuum like the much better Ford products.

    I gave him some Cheby Youtube videos showing him how to set up the new Carb then gave him the link to the Holley Website that showed him how to do the initial set up..... He was an ex-officer in the USAF so you have to use small words and/or pictures with cartoon characters.
    Once he did the correct initial idle set up with the vacuum gauges he was all set. I still think he needs to do his total timing too.
