another paint and body shop rant

Well I picked up my unfinished 66 mustang a couple of weekends ago from the paint shop and I'm disgusted and frustrated with the whole deal. I'm really not sure what I'll do next. I'm mentally and financially drained at this point.
I bought this car in the midst of restoring my fastback, because it started out cheap and looked easy. I've been getting more and more anxious about driving a classic mustang, cuz I'm not getting any younger. I was referred to Forgotten Iron in Cleburne thru a fellow mustanger. His work looked real good, his price was cheap (hindsight - too good to be true), and he said he could turn it in 3 months. Long story short - a year and a half later I picked it up in primer. It looks like 95% of the body work is done, but now I'm trying to decide what to do with it. The thought of selling it has crossed my mind, but I'm really not willing to take a loss at this point, but I can't keep throwing money at it either. I still have a fastback to finish. The coupe was going to be 'for the wife'....

Re: another paint and body shop rant

Very sorry to hear about your troubles Henry. Maybe take a few pointers from MS and Ramses and finish it up yourself....... looks close.
I'd love to find a coupe like that to build an all out track or autocross car out of.

Re: another paint and body shop rant

Real bummer! And this is why I strongly believe in just getting after it yourself(Inspired by MS).
im starting to believe most paint and body shops are nothing but talk and can never deliver. Even if you stay on top of them their is always some sort of delay.

Ya know.... I'm pretty good at shooting RED paint lol!

Re: another paint and body shop rant

I also had major disappointment from $9k worth of messed up fastback paint at Mastercraft in Ovilla.  Stay away from them!

Ramses is right.  The only way to true satisfaction is to do it yourself.  Picture shows a "teaser" shot of Ramses' 1st real attempt at paint and body.  This car was 100% apart the last time I saw it less than a week ago.

If we can't or won't paint it our selves....... we gotta settle, and hope for the bestI guess.

Re: another paint and body shop rant

I reccomend North Texas Customs in Wylie, TX for all future work. Not cheap, but a one stop shop, authorized Dynacorn dealer which they sell at cost, if they do the install.

True metal and paint craftsman, IMHO

Re: another paint and body shop rant

Agree with Ramses. Body shops don't make money on "Restoration" they make money on collision. Quick fix fender benders that they can gouge the insurance company for ah few extra bucks buy fixing parts vs replacing them. Also the insurance company's put them on time limits and are there FULL TIME customers. These complete car restorations just take them too much time for ah one time customer and end up stuck in ah corner and forgotten. Don't beileve me? just go to most any mom & pop body shop and you'll see ah classic car lost in ah corner or back lot somewhere..

Re: another paint and body shop rant

Maybe I got lucky, but I had my car painted next door to the blaster at a bodyshop that mostly does collision repair. At the time, there was record low rain in Los Angeles, hence, not as many collisions to repair. The shop was hesitant to take on the work since they know that classic guys tend to be more picky. I assured them that I was not after a show car and wouldn't be picking over every imperfection. They agreed to take it on and finished the whole thing up in about a month for about $3,500 IIRC. This was in 2007. I can't imagine having the patience to wait several months for my car. Kudos to those who can.

Re: another paint and body shop rant

Jeff, your picture reminded me of one of mine from a few years ago.  It took me two years to paint the car with 1993 completion.  It stayed with same paint until 2010 when it got crashed.  Subsequent paint by butchers will have to be removed before I am happy with the car again.  I used to have the same styled steel wheels on this car as yours has.  I really like that look.

How about starting a thread about your shoulder belts on your car?

Re: another paint and body shop rant

I pretty much followed James' site for the seatbelts, even sourcing them from Wesco. Mine was a bit easier since I did it before installing the new headliner. One thing I wish I had done and will definitely do in the not too distant future is go with a drop down sash to help keep the belt from rubbing my neck. It is not terrible, but is mildly annoying.

The most annoying thing is having only driven it barely 1,000 miles since finishing it in 2007.

Oh yeah Steve, my car was Silver Blue from the factory (lousy dark blue rattle can when I got it). I love the Silver Blue and would've gone with it, but looking at cars in shows, it seemed like about a 50/50 proposition to have the color come out looking right. I saw your Caspian Blue on this forum and had to have it. Even though it can vary as well (sometimes even depending on the amount of sun or time of day), I didn't recall seeing a bad one. Very happy with it.

Re: another paint and body shop rant

Yep, my Caspian Blue (PPG Deltron base/clear) never was "right" as far as the color being true caspian blue, but it was OK and got alot of comments at shows.  I always envied the guys that had the true caspian blue like yours!
