66 FORD MUSTANG 289 AUTO POWER STEER

I have a 66 that when i drive for a while the pedal goes rock hard and the brakes go on without touching the pedal. the car was sitting for eight months and the brakes had somehow locked on.  i tapped all the drums and they came free but after driving it for about 15 kilometres the pedal became rock solid and the brakes locked on.  after the car sat for some time it seemed okay again.  can someone advise me what would cause this and how i can fix it.

Re: 66 FORD MUSTANG 289 AUTO POWER STEER

The only problem I've ever seen like that was the wrong fluid used in the master cyl.  Engine oil was used to top it off and caused all the rubber cups to expand. Brakes would work normal for a while, then wouldn't release.

Re: 66 FORD MUSTANG 289 AUTO POWER STEER

Kenbr, I had that happen with my F-150 once.  The rod that goes from the booster diaphragm to the master cylinder piston came loose from the booster diaphragm.  When the engine made vacuum, it applied the brakes without any input from me.  When the engine was turned off and the vacuum bled out of the booster, the brakes released.  Until now, that is the only time I've seen this happen.
Good Luck
