Tires rub fenders when turning sharp

I haven't driven my at all after completing the Shelby nose conversion. While backing it in to a space at my buddies shop, both front tires rub at the bottom of the fenders. In a BAD way. Tires on the front are 245 60 15. I don't know much else about the front suspension, except that it sits pretty low. Is there a cheap way to fix this, or do I just need to budget for smaller front tires?

Re: Tires rub fenders when turning sharp

That's exactly why I put my suspension back to stock.  I entered a parking lot that had a bit of an incline and my front tire hooked the front fender.  It bent the fender and cut the tire, that's enough for me!  In the town I live in there are too many hills and hollers to worry about whether or not my tires will rub.

I guess putting the upper arm back to factory is one solution!!  With new progressive front springs and mid eye rear leafs my car sits just fine and handles just fine

Re: Tires rub fenders when turning sharp

I have 14's on my 65 with shelbydrop and it rubs when turning and hitting bumps. Although I don't consider it major rubbing, I am constantly thinking about it while driving. I am thinking of possibly returning to stock. I thought about putting 1/2 inch insulators on top of springs, but I am worried that spring could move? That's my two cents on Shelby drop.

I just put in a 1 inch spring isolator. It worked for me!

Can you roll the front fenders to get the out of the way?

Re: Tires rub fenders when turning sharp

225-60-15 is about the max for front tires........that's pretty tight still. I took MS's advice and went with 215-65-15 and it was a better fit. 245's are just too fat for the front. I have the Shelby drop on my 66 with a coil cut out. I ended up putting some 1" spacers on the top of the springs too...to keep from being paranoid.

Re: Tires rub fenders when turning sharp

HEY I have a set of spring spacers I'd make you a deal on.  Not sure of the thickness will check if your interested

Re: Tires rub fenders when turning sharp

Thanks Terry, I'd be interested but only if it will help me. If I'm still gonna need to buy new tires, then that $ will need to go towards tires. I'll be at the shop with the car tomorrow, can anyone tell me what to check for? What pictures would help?

I agree.  225-60x15 is about the largest you can put under there on 15's.  That is what I used along with 6" rims. I now have 16" tires and have gone to a 215-55x16 to get a none-rub situation.  I also had to put 3/8" shims under the spring perches to get an additional 1/2" lift on the body.  I have the Shelby drop and 1" lowering GT springs.

Re: Tires rub fenders when turning sharp

Just read a similar post..."somewhere else" and putting a small stack of washers under the spring perches will raise the front end. Seems the lift rate is twice the lift for each shims thickness. 1/2" shim=1" lift.
Hope dis hepz

Re: Tires rub fenders when turning sharp

His car is a 67/68, so a 235x60/15 will fit just fine.  They have more room than the 65/66 does.

The 245x60 is too big, even with a wheel that fits right.

The problem is not the fenders or the suspension, and nobody questioned what size and backspacing the WHEELS were.  That is usually where the problem is.  The wheel needs to be a 15x7 with 4.25" to 4.375" backspacing.  Do that with a maximum 235x60/15 tire and it won't rub.  You can lower it 2" and it still won't rub.
Rolling the fender edge to remove any sharp edges that can possibly catch the tire is always a good idea.  If a tire rubs a rounded edge, it is usually not going to hurt anything.  But if it catches a bare sharp edge, the tire AND fender are going to suffer badly.

Wheel size and especially backspacing are very important to getting wheels to fit properly.  If you install something that CAN rub, it is going to destroy a tire at the very worst possible moment where it can cause the worst possible damage.  Be safe and only install stuff that fits correctly!

Re: Tires rub fenders when turning sharp

I have the Shelby drop on my 65 fastback and had a similar issue with tire rub turning up an into an elevated driveway.  I changed springs to Mr. Gas progressive and went with tires recommended and fitted by NTB.  I now have 195R6015's on 6 inch Torque Thrust D wheels/ rims from American Racing.  The wheels have 3.66 " back spacing which is the most back spacing they make for a 15x6. I no longer have tire rub in the front.  I have 7 inch rims on the rear and the driver's side rubs when I hit a large bump.  Installing Bilstein shocks helped the problem;but, not completely.  I still rub occasionally.  I created the problem by installing a 9 inch Lincoln Versaille rearend for the disk brakes.  The brakes work great;but, the rearend is too wide on the driver's side.  I am going to solve the problem with 6 inch rims in the rear to match the front.  If anyone wants a pair of 15x7 American Racing Torque Thrust D wheels, they will be For Sale at a signifacantly reduced price..  They will fit a ford 9 inch or 8 inch with no problem.

Re: Tires rub fenders when turning sharp

It's better now.  Mr. Gas progressive springs and Bilstein shocks and high back seats and frame rail extensions made for a more solid smooth ride.  Rub was gone by then, now the bounce is gone.

Re: Tires rub fenders when turning sharp

One problem solved, created another. Replaced the wheels and tires with Shelby 10 spokes and 235/60/15 tires, and it doesn't grab the fender anymore. Now the top of the wheels rub the A arms when turning sharp. I'm assuming I will need spacers, but won't that just cause the fenders to rub again?

Re: Tires rub fenders when turning sharp

You can add some thickness to the steering stops.  I have had that same combination on a 65 and it did not rub the a-frame at all.  Those wheels have 4.375 backspacing so they should be OK.
I assume you mean the inner edge of the wheel itself hits the upper control arm?

Re: Tires rub fenders when turning sharp

Yes that's correct. Inner edge of the wheel rubs the upper control arm. Apologies...
Seller told me the backspacing was 4.25, but everything I'm seeing on websites that sell them is 4.375.
How would I add thickness to steering stops? Just add a washer or 2? Wouldn't that affect how sharply I can turn?
What about 1/4 wheel spacers?
