Re: 65 Mustang Steering/ Suspension Project

Use a recipricaping saw with a metal cuting blade about 10 inches  long .I just did this a couple of weeks ago. Took about 10 minutes.

Re: 65 Mustang Steering/ Suspension Project

I already have a potential buyer for the steering box . So buying a saw and cutting off will be double loss lol

something looks hinky with those strut bushings. I see "this side towards the rubber" printed on it, but it doesn't make sense, since it looks like the shape is concave when it should be convex ( i might have my terms wrong, but you get the idea). The nut looks recessed into the cap when I think it should be the other way.  I don't think you have the right bushings on there.

I had to undo the motor mount and lift up the engine to get the box out without cutting it....but go for it..

Yes those bushings will be changed as they were loose on the shaft too ... I was told they are supposed to be snug fit on the shaft, these had 1mm of play in every bushing

Re: 65 Mustang Steering/ Suspension Project

Those are moog bushings. Their design is different in that the concave side of the washers goes AWAY from the bushings.

Re: 65 Mustang Steering/ Suspension Project

alright here is some progress.
-- Drivers seat out
tried to take the box to firewall and turn, and pull the stering box from above.. but the pitman arm just made that wayyy too hard to turn it , and I was not about to fight that pitman arm bolt and all. So decided to go the tried and tested route of the engine mount .

--- saw that the drivers side manifold was just making it hard enough to slide that puppy out.. so I took that out.

Now the last step is the engine mount. Somehow I have this mental block and am scared to work on engine mounts... Mustang steve has encouraged me many times to do it myself, and freaking just jack the engine with a 2x4 and get those BOLTS (!!) out. and I have chickened out everytime!

But now, there is no way out! I gots to do it!!!!! today or tomorrow as time allows, I will get that engine mount out, and slide the steering box rest of the way out!

With that, the car will be completely void of any steering suspension and front brake parts.

then begins the fun part of the project.. WAIT and Slowly collect parts ! :D. ..

Re: 65 Mustang Steering/ Suspension Project

OK I got a question now. Trying to find parts now, and I cannot find Moog parts for the 65 manual steering. They all say power steering on them. Right parts are manual steering specific, and I found those. Are all the left side moog parts the same ?

Went to moog's website and even there I only see right manual specifc parts, lefts all say power steering.. do they now make left side manul steering parts? how can that be? Can someone help me with the parts numbers i need for Left inner tie rod, Left outer tie rod, Left tie rod adjusting sleeve please

And company Pitman arm y'all suggest?
Thanks

The left and right inner tie rods are the same ES713
Tie Rod adjusting sleeve is the same on both sides ES2004S
The left and right outer tie rods are the same on manual steering ES336R

Re: 65 Mustang Steering/ Suspension Project

Rock Auto had the best Moog prices when I did my front end.  Good support, too.  One of my UCA shafts was defective, and they overnighted a new one to me.  As for pitman arm, is there something wrong with the one you have?  It is a pretty sturdy part, and can probably be reused, unless the Borg box you are going to has a different size shaft than your stock box.

Once you get the old box out, loosen the pitman arm nut, and take the box to Oreilleys and borrow their arm puller for free and remove/reuse the arm.

Here's a link to pics and applications for pitman arms:

Re: 65 Mustang Steering/ Suspension Project

Alright!!!!!!!!! So yesterday was very much fun and hella productive! Was at Steve's place in Ovilla, and he very generously showed me how not to screw up rebuilding UCArms and also save money by rebuilding UCArms , and showed me some tricks of the trade!

Of course like many of y'all , he has forgotten more than I know , but man it was fun working beside him seeing him work his magic and pick up a few tricks here and there! ! And wow did we find POS issues in the old UCA build!

We also did the second bearing install on the steering column ! We cut the steering column tube to where it was supposed to be , then found out we both marked wrong (too short) on the tube , (which I would have if I was doing this at my place ) , but the difference here  was that I was in MS's garage , so he fixed that for me ! :D lol so all that to say, I am now ready to just start bolting things on the mustang!!!!!

The shortened length of the steering column tube we figured out for now was 23 3/4 inches on a stock 65 column tube from below where the curvy thing (the cover under the horn assembly) lol whatever that's called . I'll draw it on the pic later .

All that to say! A Huge thanks to mustang Steve for letting me take much of his time yesterday and all the awesome tricks he showed me ;) and all the fun I had working on this with him!! You rock sir!

Re: 65 Mustang Steering/ Suspension Project

Here is something I wanted to share!  Look at these UCA bolt holes on the passenger side. There old holes had droooped and elongated! Man the issues I am solving with this project, it's amazing!!

Those lower holes are the Shelby drop mounting holes for the UCA's now!

Then the POS syndrome kicked in.. Installed there borgeson pump and steering box, (just there box) and saw that the old owners "fabricated" mount for the power steering ram was too big for letting my pitman arm fit !

So.i hacked it off!!! Lol yep now the pitman fits like a charm.

Fitting the three bolts on the borgeson was hard , but it's in anyway look at that huge peice of metal I removed in the second pic , that was in the way!
