My 66 Mustang has a big cam in the engine, 14 inches of vacuum at idle. The car has Granada brakes with a power booster, the booster needs more vacuum. Thinking of installing a vacuum pump. Has anyone done this? Was it a after market or from another car? Any info is appreciated.

13 inches of idle vacuum works my Bendix booster just fine...at what rpm are you doing your vacuum read....jj

Jerseyjoe the engine was idling at 800 rpm. I was reading some info on brake boosters and the info stated 18 inches of vacuum was needed to properly operate a booster.

My 65 supercharged 5.0 car has 2-3 inches at idle so I feel you pain. I have added a vacuum canister and that helps for 2-3 pedal pushes and then it runs out of steam in traffic light situations. I've purchased the Master Power vacuum pump (From Steve's Mustang Parts) ;-) but have not installed it yet for a review yet. It was the version before their current one "Electric Vacuum Pump Kit - p/n: AC9001K"

I too was running a big cam in my 408 Cleveland stroker...I had 7 inches of vacuum...C6 shifted like crap and power brakes sucked...I installed a Summit SUM760150 billet vacuum pump...brakes worked great but trans still shifted very poorly up and down and I had to listen to the pump cycle on and off all the time...three months later I pulled the cam and pump and swapped the cam for a milder more streetable version of what I had...I'm now a very very happy camper and my Cleveland still turns close to 7000 rpm and trans shifts great ....and brakes work great too at 13in.of vacuum....70 Mach1...jj

Whitestang, what booster do you have? They are not all created equal. If it is one of those 7" boosters, there is not much hope it will ever feel like power brakes.

This booster came out of a Ford Fairmont as I recall. It is the one that Mustang Steve suggest using with the modified brake pedal and a 1 inch bore dual master cyl.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
