Help ! I have a small problem but it irritates the blank out of me

I have just brought home a new ride. A 1968 Mustang Fastback 2+2 base 289 automatic. Well I have a ticking sound caused by a fan shroud that is warped and the tip of the fan touches its. Other than buying a new/ old fan shroud what should I do?

You should post this in the FYI tech section for more visibility and responses from forum members.

Before you purchase a new shroud, take a look at your motor mounts and make sure they are in good shape,
A broken/collapsed  mount could be causing your engine to “lean” to one side resulting in the fan blades striking the shroud.......ask me how I know this......

Good luck and welcome to the forum....

Welcome to FYIFORD.  Glad you found us.

Josh gave sound advice.  If everything is installed correctly, the fan shroud should not be able to touch the fan.  Be sure you have the correct diameter fan. I believe 17" is correct for small block cars.

Most 68 fan shrouds have some lateral adjustment that can be obtained by loosening the four attaching bolts and sliding the shroud sideways.  Do not overtighten the bolts or it can crack the shroud mounting brackets.

Also, if your car has an aftermarket plastic fan shroud, it can be heated and reshaped a bit for clearance.  That should be a last resort, though.  It is best to fix the real problem rather than doing bandaid fixes that only mask the symptoms.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Yes on all of the above. I had the same problem, probably because it was a after-market shroud. I got the dremel tool out, found where it was making contact and ground some away for clearance. Takes just a little bit to make a lot of noise!  Easy fix.

Thanks for the advice I will check for a broken or worn out engine mount 1st. Then go from there.
