clutch pedal bearing support

while i have my car completely disassembled was thinking i may want to install clutch pedal bearings kit

whats the best kit to get?  do they just use clips to hold it in the pedal support or do they need to be welded in?

My pedal and support are both in good shape just figured the bearings would make it a smoother operation and prevent future wear.

Re: clutch pedal bearing support

Mine has to be welded on, but you get the benefit of having a bearing that has a hardened inner race, unlike the ones that have exposed rollers that rely on the mild steel pedal shaft as the inner race.  I have only seen a very few shafts that would even work, usually on garage kept, low-mileage cars.

If your shaft is PERFECT, then it will work for a good while with the roller bearing kit.  If it is perfect or completely shot, it will work fine forever with the MS sealed bearing kit.

If your pedal support is worn so bad that the holes in the sides are elongated, the weld-on will make it like new.  The clamp-in type typically are not a good fix for those problems.

Re: clutch pedal bearing support

I added the MS roller bearing assembly at the same time I was doing the cable clutch conversion. You need to weld it, but it is a very easy install. My pedal shaft looked a bit sketchy, but was able to run a flap wheel and some sandpaper around it and it works better than new. It sounds like I may not have had a fun time with the bolt-on kit.

General observation here, but the MS parts seem to put function first, even if that means not doing a bolt-on and requiring a bit extra on the install. I think the extra work shows up in the performance of the product.

Re: clutch pedal bearing support

I bought Steve's complete pedal support assembly with the bearings already set up. It's a nice upgrade over the factory support, much more substantial. I think it's a pretty good deal for you get.

Re: clutch pedal bearing support

What are you doing for brakes on your car and what year is it?  If considering an upgrade to power, a bearing upgrade and the MS pedal support upgrade/mod for the booster install is also an option.  A lot depends on what year car and the original brake and clutch mechanism configuration.

Re: clutch pedal bearing support

i had already installed the Baer track disc brake kit on the front and used a bendix brake booster and new power brake pedal.  I have also now got ahold of the rear baer track kit so I will have 4 wheel disc.

I will probably need to look for a different master cylinder.  I used one from i believe the early maverick. Will have to double check what it was from but it was new not rebuilt.

I also have the Wilwood como valve that is adjustable proportioning valve and distribution block combined.

I am switching to manual transmission now so I am actually adding a pedal to my current non-manual pedal support so both the pedal shaft and pedal support are never used. just figured it might make a smoother operation with the bearing support and not have to worry about it wearing out.

Re: clutch pedal bearing support

Hey MS,

What's involved in installing your bearing support kit?

I have a good pedal support and clutch pedal shaft.

Do i need to drill out the shaft holes oversize?

How does the bearing fit in to the pedal support?
