I'm in the middle of deciding if I wanna mod a gm rack in my 64 1/2 coupe 289 with c4. I need to rebuild my power steering like I did on another stang but don't know if I want to I'm going to put a gm rack in my mustang. I've seen all the after market kits and what they do to mod the travel to make them closer to stock. This shouldn't be to hard I did this in a 56 ford sedan a while ago great results very similar to are mustang steering and suspension set up

IDK of any one who hasbuilt one. Though several of us have aftermarket R&P's, which are based on GM units.

Ya I've seen I can't remember where I saw how to mod the rack but its simple affective way to gain full nessasry travel to go from stop to stop this was done on a 65 falcon 67 galaxie a 56 ford numerous amounts of cars now I'm gonna try it on mine

ill try and find it. Basically where the register window is enlarge it if I remember correctly 1 and a 1/16" if remember correctly ill try and find the papers I printed out on the moded rack.

I regularly scour the local yards for a rear steer rack that will work from any vehicle. No success yet!

Randall's rack is just a GM rack with a center linkage installed where it is not designed to have one. It can be done, but it is scary to have a lever arm with two bolts so close together in the center.

I know randals is a off shelf gm and some other kits for mustang and other rear steer fords are actually a sabb that looks almost identical to the gm. Scary maybe if the centerlink bracket for the rack it built poorly. I have my power steering components out now. And I'm going to the salvage yard soon hopefully I got some crapy work shifts so when I get done I can't go so I have to go early which doesn't always work out ha ha. Anyways after I get the rack ill use wood templets when figuring out placement seance you want to duplicate stock to limate bump steer. Ideal rack to use seance there are j rack variations the one I know for sure is a 97 skylark because it actually has a longer lock to lock and then ill along ate the window to get the full lock to lock amount.

I believe its a early 90s Beretta or Cavilar Rack.

Yes lots of gm cars had rear steer racks some kits use cavalier and beretta rack. I found the skylark rack has more lock to lock than others

I tried for a while, modified a cheby cavalier rack, but eventually bought a unisteer. Didn't like how little was left of the case when I was done modifying.

Anyone know which GM racks Steeroids uses? Are these mods applicable? Although I can't imagine a Steeroids turning radius being any worse than my '92 LX. THAT thing does U-turns almost as poorly as the Titanic.

Here's what I did on my '67 using some leftover Mazda 929 R&Ps I had lying around:
Reason for having those Mazda rack units leftover was that I designed a R&P conversion kit, but later used a German made ZF center take off unit that finally made it into production. I just made the design, testing and the first short series of kits before I let some other guys take over the whole production, sales and support of it.

Hakan's has substantial distance betwen the two centerlink attaching points and that makes it a whole lot stronger than the ones where the bolts are close together. Nice work!

Thanks Steve! What you just mentioned was one of my major considerations when I designed and built it.

The pictures I linked shows how I used parts from two Mazda 929 R&Ps to make a custom one-off center take off unit. It replaces the front crossmember, but I've made another crossmember and I also made a lot of other reinforcement to the whole unibody construction to try to avoid any flex.
The German made ZF R&P I was talking about has the same applications as the GM J-car R&P as a number of European cars also was built on that GM platform. The big difference is that the ZF unit is of a much higher quality than the Saginaw version of the same design R&P.

Well today before all the family got here for the get together. I was able to pull the old steering components out and get ready for the rack and pinion to be put in place. Now all else there is is to shorten the steering column and shape it into a double d shaft simple enough with no rushing a steady hand with a die grinder and a dremel. I actually found a post someone said that a 2003 Monte Carlo has the perfect length steering shaft with universals for the j rack set up

Tempo/Topaz rear steer rack is being used on some "Coyote" 5.0 DOHC conversions.
IIRC there is a fitment issue with them and the narrower Mustang chassis.

Well I picked up my j rack and pinion today from the salvage yard with the billows and a intermitant steering shaft as well I also got my door armrest for my custom door panels and two window motors for custom power windows ill post my pics soon

Let us know how the rack trns out. There's a guy selling parts off a 90's Beretta, was going after window motors and the rack if he will let it go cheep. Don't want to pay to much, not sure if i will ever use it.
