I need to know if an Explorer 5.0 with Explorer accessories will fit into my 69 Cougar. I've look online and can't find any posts or pics of one in any kind of Mustang. But, also not finding anyone who says it won't fit. This engine was in my 93 Ranger, I can't believe it would fit in there and not a Cougar.

Now that's a sweet looking Engine! Maybe that ac/pump might be close to the frame rail. Do some measuring. Steve69

5.0 is a 5.0. Merc had'em as well as FoMoCo. Should bolt right up.

The engine itself will physically fit. From that standpoint a 5.0 is a 302. Where things get tricky is what year is the engine and consequently what heads are on it? The 5.0s used in the Explorer had GT40 heads ('96-early '97), which are a good iron factory performance head. The last few years of 5.0 production (early '97-01) they switched to the GT40P heads, which are a slightly better head from a performance standpoint, but the exhaust ports were raised, and this can cause header fitment issues. GT40s have three vertical ribs cast into the front off the head, GT40Ps have four. Additionally the GT40Ps have a different spark plug angle which can also cause header fitment problems.
If the engine has a dual sump oil pan that will not fit an early chassis and must be swapped for an early front sump pan.
The other issue is the accessories. I know Mustang accessories will work, but the Explorer accessories are mounted differently, so I can't say for sure, but I tend to agree with Steve69 that the low mount AC compressor is likely a problem. The only serpentine accessories I can determine definitely fit are those from a Fox body Mustang. There's no mix and matching either; you have to run everything or nothing. The early style accessories will work on the later engine though, so that's an option.
The early radiator is not set up for the 5.0 hose locations, so your best bet is to swap in a new radiator.

Looks pretty good. Already has the EDIS removed so it must be running on the 93-back computer/harness...that's good. Change to 88-93 Fox front dress, get a set of Hi-Po manifolds, and it'll probably go. You will probably need to move the battery due to the right side intake and come up with a different air intake tube. Of course you will also need to address the fuel system plumbing.
If you don't want to move the battery, you can run the upper intake to the left. I like this setup 'cause I don't need a cable throttle or to move the batter. Takes a bit of re-engineering on the the throttle body but it ain't RS. Also, you can use the "Standard 5.0" two-belt system which is rock solid and easy to come by in Crown Vics, etc.
I have some patterns to modify the AC brackets and get the compressor up a bit and tighter to the engine from the stock Standard 5.0 mounts.
