I saw this early 65 AKA 64 1/2 at a carshow today

The owner says he was told by a previous owner that it was specially built to go overseas to England I think!  Thus the rear view mirros on the fenders!  can anyone dispute or confirm what he was told

Though some Euro cars of the era had that look, Japanese cars did have that feature too.  I doubt it was exclusive to export cars. Did it have a one piece export brace?? RHD?? Kilometer Speedo??
That "Thunderbolt" hood bubble wasn't fer export.
If the guy wasn't just trying to pump up his cars value, I'd bet the "story" came from a PO handed to a gulible buyer.

export brace was missing but he said it was 2 peice. it was LHD!  and i did not notice the speedo.

He was not trying to sell the car so i doubt he was pumping it up.  he said he was the third owner with the second being a relative of his.   he just said he was told about the export part

Have no idea if it's true or not, only way to get closer to get it verified I think might be the DSO code, here's some info I copied from http://www.vintage-mustang.com/topics/decode/decode.html:

DSO (Domestic Special Order) District Codes
Appearing in this space is the two-digit number of the district which ordered the unit. Units built on special order, domestic or foreign, have the complete order number in this space.

11 Boston
12 Buffalo
13 New York
14 Pittsburgh
15 Newark
21 Atlanta
22 Charlotte
23 Philadelphia
24 Jacksonville
25 Richmond
26 Washington
31 Cincinnatti
32 Cleveland
33 Detroit
34 Indianapolis
35 Lansing
36 Louisville
41 Chicago
42 Fargo
43 Rockford
44 Twin Cities
45 Davenport
51 Denver
52 Des Moines
53 Kansas City
54 Omaha
55 St. Louis
61 Dallas
62 Houston
63 Memphis
64 New Orleans
65 Oklahoma City
71 Los Angeles
72 San Jose
73 Salt Lake City
74 Seattle
81 Ford of Canada
83 Government
84 Home Office Reserve
85 American Red Cross
89 Transportation Service
90-99 Export

As a sidenote: My '67 coupe had holes on top of the front fenders like if there once were mirros attached to them, but I highly doubt they did that at the factory as I can't recall seeing a classic Mustang here in Europe with mirrors on the front fenders.

Perhaps the positive battery cable looped around the hood bumper was an export only feature as well.

actually that was a bungee cord, for lack of a battery tie down.

Re: I saw this early 65 AKA 64 1/2 at a carshow today

An old high-school buddy had a '65 Falcon that had the mirrors mounted way up at the front of the fenders like the car in the link below, I think they were even the same shape - rectangular not round - seemed like that's where they'd always been on his car which was a very stock, original paint 2-door hardtop 6-cyl, three on the tree.

Re: I saw this early 65 AKA 64 1/2 at a carshow today

Dealers sold those Rotunda brand mirrors over the counter and to a customer that wanted mirrors on a car that had none, or just one.

I remember seeing lots of people driving with them in San Antonio when I was growing up.

It is the absolute worst location for a mirror that anyone could choose.  You cannot see a darned thing out of them.  The closer to your eye, the better they work, and the wider field of vision you will have.

Re: I saw this early 65 AKA 64 1/2 at a carshow today

Maybe it's just a British thing.  I had a '52 Jaguar and a '58 MGA that both had the mirrors mounted way up on the front fenders.  I think they were originals.
