i have a 1961 Falcon (original mustang I was told), and I am replacing the steering column with an aftermarket column. I would like to keep from having to cut the original steering gearbox shaft (death spear). I was looking at later years Falcon gearboxes and saw the 68 gearbox looks very similar to my 61 but without the long shaft. But you can't tell measurements from pics.
Does anyone know if they will interchange? If yes, is there any fabrication needed or other parts that will have to be changed? Or will it be a direct fit?
If it will fit, this will make my column replacement much easier.
I heard that there is an abundance of knowledge here, so I'm hoping someone can help me. I don't have the parts readily available to look at, and I was hoping the mustang steering gearboxes were somewhat the same.
Thank you!!!!

Hey CF.... Welcome to FYI. I love those early Falcons. I am no steering box expert, but I will share what I think I know, which will give others a chance to correct me if I'm wrong. I believe early Falcons and 65 to 67 Mustangs have the long shaft box. Many 65 to 67 Mustang owners have swapped in the 68+ box and collapsible columns, without issue. My thoughts would be that if you are using an aftermarket column, why not use the box you already have, and cut the shaft, and add the rag joint to mate the box to your aftermarket column. If you cut the shaft, be sure to dimple it for the set screw, and use locktite on the set screw.

I believe in the middle of 67 ford went from a 1" pitman shaft to 1 1/8" shaft.
TimC - Another reason to replace the gearbox is that it has a 27:1 ratio as specified by the service manual. It drives like power steering. I can get the 68 in a 20:1 or 16:1. Would make for less turning. Thanks for the info.
AT - I found the 68 in both shaft sizes. I just need to get under the car and make sure what size is on mine. Thank you too.

Last month I had my box rebuilt by Chockostang. If you are in the USA, do an internet search and call him on the phone. He is a knowledgeable FORD guy, and is happy to talk on the phone. He will know all the interchanges.
If you are talking Aussie Falcons, I know nothing..... but 50Vert, here on FYI probably does.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
