T5 tremec or t5 z spec ?

Hi guys , i am looking for some suggestions about two offers i found for a t5 transmission  .
As the budget is coming a problem , am looking at these two.
T5 tremec and Ford m 7003 z spec .
Both comes with shifters and got same gear ratio .
The price is the same .and i know that are quite the same
I know that cant handle too much power but i will not use as race car .
I have prepared the rear axle with a new LSD and a 3,80 as suggested .
The t5 was argumented many times , an i ask sorry , but i got to choose one and hope someone want to reply .
As the budget is limited i cant think to upgrade with elical gear , by now i Need to have a good 5 gear . maybe next 10 years i will rebuild with strongest gear .
Thank you

As long as your not over 400hp you should be good to go.

Re: T5 tremec or t5 z spec ?

Are you sure the ratio's are the same?  Regular T5's have 3.27 first.  The T5z is a 2.95,  you will find the 2.95 T5z ratio's are just about perfect for your 3.80.

First Gear Ratio: 2.95:1
Second Gear Ratio: 1.94:1
Third Gear Ratio: 1.34:1
Fourth Gear Ratio: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear Ratio: 0.63:1
These are the same for both .
These Super-Duty T-5 transmissions from Ford Racing are world class.

Features:
* Heavy-duty "World Class" T-5 5-speed manual transmission with short-throw shifter
* 300 ft./lbs. torque capacity
* Double-moly 2nd speed, 3rd speed and countershaft cluster gears
* Carbon-fiber 3-4 blocker rings
* Improved synchronizers and bearings
* 1-1/16 in. diameter 10-tooth input spline
* 28-tooth output spline
* 7-tooth speedometer drive gear
* Cobra-style pocket bearing
This first  comes as Ford , the other one from

American Powertrain Tremec T-5 manual transmissions are highly versatile transmissions that have been installed as original equipment in many vehicles over the years. All forward gears are fully synchronized using carbon fiber type sychronizer materials to make silky smooth shifts. The single-rail shift system, aluminum shift forks, and tapered roller bearings on the main and countershafts provide rock-solid reliability with reduced noise.

If anyone can find some difference and sign me which is better is welcome

Re: T5 tremec or t5 z spec ?

If everything's the same buy whichever is cheapest.  IME a lot was made over the "double molly" gears and the "Z-spec" gears, but I don't think there is much real difference.  The Z-Spec may have a slightly, and I stress the word slightly, stronger gearset because 1-3, the input shaft, and the cluster gear are all made from higher grade alloy.  But, as I've said many times, 3rd gear is the one you're going to break in a street driven T5, so the 3rd gear is about equivalent, though you do get the slightly stronger cluster gear with the Z-Spec.  Out of curiosity, what's the cost difference?

Glenn did my Z a few years back and it was around $1000.   Not sure how much shipping would be to Italy though.

it makes a lot of difference !  500/700 usd easy  only the difference in shipping ,if
you Have a t5 to rebuild with better gears is about 1400 , some handwork  and that's all .
Be home base in usa will be  easier
i got a swap from 4 to 5  and shipping cost is dramatically an issue .

Re: T5 tremec or t5 z spec ?

A couple years ago you could by the Z-spec gear kit from Ford/Tremec for $450.  Sadly that's no longer the case.  That kit now is going to run you more like $950 and my supplier had doubts that he could even get a complete set.  All the Z-spec gears currently being made are being put into the new transmissions coming off the Tremec line.  They aren't really selling the individual parts anymore.  Actually most of the T5 parts are NLA and the stuff we're using now is aftermarket stuff made in India.  I was skeptical at first, but I've yet to have a quality issue with any of the India made parts; the machining is quite good and the price is usually a bit more than good used OEM parts, but cheaper than new OEM (if you can even find the an OEM part you're looking for anymore).

At $950 for the Z-spec gear kit I would just pony up the extra $400 and buy the G-Force Street/Synchro gearset, which is considerably stronger than the Z-Spec gears and doesn't have the availability issue.

I used to make decent money building Z-Spec T5s for people, I even built quite a few for GM guys, but it seems that as the T5 has aged and more and more guys are just swapping to the Tremec or a T56 (space permitting that trans is BIG) the demand for T5 stuff has dwindled, and so has supply.  I am sure that in a few more years it will spike again as more and more guys start restoring Fox body cars.  Then you'll see more aftermarket support, and maybe even OEM.  This happened with the Muncie 4-speeds GM musclecars run.  At one point it was like nothing was available new, the old stuff out there was junk, and it was hard to even get a solid one together.  Now you can literally build a complete trans from parts.  Great quality stuff too, I think its all made in Italy if IIRC.  Ironic.
