It wont crank

Today when I drove to church my wife didn't like the way I parked so I immediately went to start it to repark. It didn't even turn over a full revolution and the battery acted like it was dead. Two hours later we went to leave and there was no sign of an issue. A half hour later I went out again in it and had no trouble but after being at my destination for 15 minutes it drug similar but started. When it does this it acts like the timing is to far advanced and it knocks real hard one or two licks. Isn't there a way to retard the timing for starting without effecting the advance? The advance is perfect right now. The battery is 11/2 years old, the cheap small NAPA one. Got any ideas? I really dont want trouble like this going onto the Bash.

Re: It wont crank

It is the stock dist. with a single port vacuum advance on a bored and stroked 351W with a Edelbrock 4v  carb. MS told me to get a DuraSpark but I haven't done that yet.

Re: It wont crank

Did you clean your battery terminals?

Re: It wont crank

Possibly heat soak in the starter. You didn't say if you're running headers, but climb underneath and see how much clearance you have between exhaust and starter.

Re: It wont crank

When it occurs, feel the positive cable.  If it is hot, it could just be a starter issue.

Re: It wont crank

The battery cables are clean and corrosion protected, the starter is one of those high torque ones that can be taken apart and repositioned to clear the headers. Yes I do have headers, long tube type. I never thought about checking the battery cable for heat. Today my truck battery took a dive while being tested cause I suspected that it was week. I think I'll have the Mustang battery tested.

Re: It wont crank

If by stock distributor you mean points, condenser etc I would suspect the condenser.

It has been converted to a Pertronix I system.

Re: It wont crank

You say the battery cables are "corrosion protected".  What, exactly, did you use?  I've seen any number of starting issues from battery cables that had been coated with grease.  It heats up and flows between the clamp and the post, then becomes an insulation....HIGH RESISTANTCE.

Re: It wont crank

Well that is exactly what is on it. I never thought about that. I use LPS 3 which is a newer version of cosmolien. Guess I'll clean it off.
