I currently have the original c4 in my 65 coupe. It was bolted up to a 200 from the factory. 157 tooth,24 spline. It was rebuilt but now it slips when it gets hot, after drving for 20 minutes or so. First it will slip going into 3 and then it will slip in all gears. I have it bolted up to a 1969 302 now. It worked great for about 300 miles and then the slipping started. The trans was rebuild about 15 years ago and stayed in plastic bag until 6 months ago when I put it in the car.
First questions any thoughts on the slipping? Could it be a torque converter problem? I can buy a c4 out of a 67 coupe, it is a V-8 trans. will it fit? I'm guessing it has the larger bell housing which I will have to get my headers around. but other than that?
I did adjust the vacuum mod to get it to shift sooner, 2 turns out. I put dex/merc fliud in it after the slipping started to see if that would help I had type f in it when I installed it.

Couple of questions first.
Do you intend to keep the car origonal?? Like with the 6 cyl? Do you intend to take it on Interstate Hwys much??
I'm asking to see if your a candidate for an overdrive tranny. Modernizing your car is the thing to do, not always the answer for everyone though.
If your a candidate for an OD trans, spending money twice(fix-later replace) isn't the best.
If I'm reading correctly you alreay have a V-8 in the car, you have prolly gotten the use out of the 6 cyl C-4 in that case. Time for a replacement trans.
My reccommendation is to get either a T-5 five speed manual or a 4R70W automatic. Some folks say an AOD is the easiest automatic to use, I heartily disagree. Before getting into that, plz let us know more bout what you have and intended uses.

I'm planning on keeping a c4, not that numbers matching is important but I don't have the money to do all the mods for an AOD. I liked the way the car drove when the c4 was working fine. A bit high on the rpms (3000) at 70 MPH but I can live with that. Living in California yes I drive on the freeway alot, but short trips.

Well far be it, from me to argue against what someone chooses to do with their own car.
I will stick with, if you have a 6 cyl C-4 bolted to a V-8. And the C-4 is slipping. Ya prolly need to replace it.

Being as the C4 came out of a 6 cyl car it might have weaker internals. Not sure about that, but knowing Ford's propensity for weaker 6 cylinder car things, I don't doubt it. Find someone in your area who can rebuild it with stronger internals if it needs it. Who knows what happened to it when it was last touched. Save yourself some labor costs and do the install yourself. Install a cooler. You should be good to go.

Thanks Guys, Yes I'll remove and install it myself, I feel confident I can do that. Anyone know if the 67 c-4 is a drop in replacement? Beside that fact that I don't think a 67 is a green dot.

I used some DVDs from badshoe productions. You should look it up. Everything you need. You can easily rebuild that tranny.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
