It depends on the battery. The old style battery still needs to be vented. Optima sealed type don't need vented.
Some of the new batteries can even be mounted sideways or upside down ... not sure why you would want to though.

We also save on fuel pumps cos we use gravity feed.

I always thought the motors turned the opposite direction down there.
