How to Remove Dip Stick Tube?

1966 Mustang, 1988 5.0/302 HO MAF Swap, T5z, Hydraulic Clutch, Shorty Hedman Headers

I need to pull the dipstick tube from the block to install my shorty headers from the bottom.  The oil dipstick tube is in the way.  Do I just yank really hard on the tube?  Last thing I want to do is turn a 5 minute task into an entire saturday task of removing the oil pan to remove a broken dip stick tube.

Also, for clearance issues I'm going with a flexible (probably Lokar) replacement dipstick tube.  I guess it's braided steel.  Any comments?

Vice grips are one of my favorite tools!
Don't crush the tube.... butt grip it good and gentle screw it back and forth. (don't read ANYTHING into this response!!....Especially Don!!)

Yep... pull and twist.  It's just a friction fit.

Re: How to Remove Dip Stick Tube?

Got it out.  Vice grips did the trick.  Somebody on another forum recommended some heat. Just took some consistent twist and pull action.

Re: How to Remove Dip Stick Tube?

I know you already got it out, but thought I would share a technique for dipstick removal.
It also uses vise-grips. Clamp the tube as tight as possible without crushing it, as low as possible. Rather than twisting the vise-grips, tap upward on the side of the tool with a hammer. That usually gets them to come out.  For stubborn tubes, stick a bolt or solid rod in the top of the tube and then clamp with the vise-grips. The rod will keep from crushing the tube, getting a better clamp action. Then tap the side of the vise-grips.

One more tip from my experience.  If you want to buy a shiny new chrome tube, and if it says FORD RACING or CALIFORNIA PONY CARS on it,  look for something else.

Be sure to mark the current oil level on the dipstick before replacing the tube. They are not all the same length and knowing what the level is will help you cut the new tube to length.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Bought the Lokar braided steel one a few years back, don't buy it !
It's basically a cheap plastic tube hose with some braided steel which seems just for looks, no quality at all, it fell apart before it was even mounted properly.

Quick tip if you broke the dipstick tube just above the piece that sits inside, take a big enough screw and screw that inside then pull it out with a pair of pliers, works like a charm without having to pull the sump.
