I was installing a seal kit in my power steering pump on my 67 coupe and decided to go ahead and purchase a new bolt kit that includes the long threaded stud and spacer. I decided to replace what was on there as it looked jerry rigged. The engine in my car is not original and is actually a 69 302. This kit stated it would fit 67-69. Now I've discovered the stud in the kit is 3/8" diameter and the hole on the cylinder head is 7/16". Is there another ford of that year or any year that would have that same stud but in 7/16" dia. I believe my only option is to drill it out and put a heli-coil for 3/8" diameter.

Heck, maybe you could just find the right sized bolt at the hardware store. The threads used on those engines are standard SAE.

The stud I'm talking about is like 7" lg. If you try to use a bolt there, the radiator will get in your way.

70 and later had 7/16" bolt

Pretty sure I Helicoiled the long alternator bolt hole in my '67 back to 3/8" from 7/16". 20+ years later its still working fine. You can do all sorts of tricks with Helicoils. I've even had to thread one insert into a larger one to bush down a hole that was really trashed. Worked fine, held fine. They're stainless steel and pretty tough. Locktite them in there good an you should never have to worry again.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
