It's amazing what new shoes and a new posture will do for a car. Went from Clark Kent to Superman. Very nice

Which front springs did you wind up with?

Front springs are original six cylinder springs. They are not much different than small block non-AC springs.
Will reevaluate springs once v8 and AOD are installed.
I wound up with a nearly new Rod&Custom MII front end with adjustable coilovers and power rack that I am considering using, just because it would get a power rack installed real cheap. I am not a bigfan of MII but at least I could use it for comparison on a car of not alot of value.

Keep us posted on what you think of MII.

Looks like the '68 has a straight body on it. That's always a big plus. I see that yours is a later model '68, compared to mine which is an early model '68. Later models had surface-mounted rear quarter panel reflectors with a chrome bezel (taken from the Cougar parts bin). Early '68 models had recessed quarter panel reflectors with a body colored bezel around them.

If I ever decide to paint the car, I plan to remove the rear side markers. But I really like the faded gold patina, so that may never happen.

One nice thing of leaving it as is you wont be afraid of driving it or parking it and worrying about a ding in at $10000 paint job.

Wait a minute! MS, you do still have your fastback, right?

That's an interesting tid-bit. My '68 has the surface mounted reflectors with a chrome bezel. The date for it is (14C) March 14, 1968. So is my car an "early" later model '68?

Word I got about the Cougar reflectors was that the vendor that made the flush mounted reflectors was on strike, and they were not available, so Ford opted to mount the external ones from the Cougars. Those are the ones I had on mine, before I replaced the rear quarters, and decided to leave them off.

February 15th, '68 was the changeover date from the early recessed reflectors to the later model surface-mounted quarter panel reflectors.
The UAW strike in '68, at the Ford assembly plants, is what forced the various changes to parts installed (or, more correctly), deleted from the later models, compared to what all was installed on the earlier '68 models.

I saw in the original picture (when was this taken by the way) that the front sat high. What is the deal with that? My car sat high too, even after I fitted new rear leaf springs.
Is this your car too Steve?
Offline
It sat ridiculously high in front. I remember my 70 Boss 302 also sat high in front from the factory.
Yes, the gold 68 is my car. I still have my 66.. i have a 1989 Lincoln MK VII 5.0 and AOD I will be installing in the 68. It will be carbureted, box stock except for 289 Hipo manifolds and a 2-1/4" dual exhaust system. I will use the serpentine belt system from a 90 5.0 Mustang. I used the Lincoln serpentine belt setup on the 54 F-100 I built. It is very similar with only a few minor parts different than the Mustang version. I plan to install a Vintage Air AC system. The 65 coupe I bought to use as a donor for the front half of the yellow 65 fastback had a fresh 3.25 traction lock 8" in it, so that will be replacing the 2.79 single track I installed in the 68 last month.

Does anyone know why these old cars sat so high in the front?
Out of all your cars Steve, which is your favorite? Did you finish off that pick-up? I haven't seen any more updates on it.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
