Thursday is movng day

What a pain moving is!!!

I have to load a 6' long roll-away tool box into a u-haul trailer. The box reportedly weighs 700 pounds empty, but now is loaded. The trailer does not have a ramp on it.

You guys are great with coming up with ingenious solutions to complex problems. Help me figure out how to load this thing!!   I really don't want to, but I figure I will have to remove all the drawers to accomplish this. I have some 2x6's I could use for ramps, but not sure that will even work.  This box is heavy!  It has 5" casters on it

I wish some of you lived close by. We could have a toolboxloadingbeerguzzlingwednesdaynightmeeting!!!

Re: Thursday is movng day

Some strappings and a engine hoist?

Re: Thursday is movng day

If you have the 4 post lift you could raise the tool box to the trick bed level and roll it in.

Are you friends with a tow truck driver? Roll the box on a roll back tow truck and back it up to the u haul.

Re: Thursday is movng day

The simple solution is to get the tow truck driver to sling the box one end at a time and load one end at a time into the u-haul. This is an open top trailer isn't it?

The first fallback option is to use an engine hoist to do the same thing. Lots more human power required for that option. You want me to bring my 2-ton engine hoist over?

The second fallback option is to use floor jacks to raise one end of the toolbox into the trailer, then jack up the other end of the box, block it up with the 2x6's until you can roll it onto the trailer.

Re: Thursday is movng day

does HF still sell those aluminum ramps?   I like the engine hoist idea.  That was how I unloaded the rotisserie box.
edit:

They dont look like they are so cheap anymore.   I thought I paid like 50? or so.   I got the HF tool boxes out of the truck with this.    But it doesnt look like it would meet the weight requirements.

If multiple things can go wrong, the one that will go wrong will be the one that causes the most damage.

Re: Thursday is movng day

I sold my lift and my engine hoist.  Your suggestions have given me some ideas, IF my floor jack can fit under the end of the box.  Jack up the box so two casters are about the height of the trailer, then back the trailer under the box. Then jack up other end and back the trailer under it.

Even If I have to use a 2x6 as a lever to incrementally raise the box and crib under it with wood, that should work.

Other ideas also appreciated!!!  Maybe an even better one will come along.

Re: Thursday is movng day

find a friend with a flatbed tow truck. Just pull it up the deck like a car. That's how we've done it.

Re: Thursday is movng day

I would either get the proper trailer or get a rollback towtruck. If you start lifting with straps or hoists and don't distribute the load properly you will have a 700 pound taco.

Re: Thursday is movng day

Two engine hoists, one on each end of the cabinet.
I have a 12volt winch that pulled lawn mowers onto a trailer for my church.
I have a collapsible 1-ton hoist and the winch if the Wednesday night thing happens.
Whatever you decide, MS, be careful with your lower back,

Re: Thursday is movng day

I have a 4X8' open top utility trailer with 30" sides.  I used a floor jack to lift the casters where it would roll into the trailer, then backed the trailer under the casters.  Once I got it settled, I lifted the rear wheels with the floor jack.  I used 2X4's to center the toolbox over the axle by forming a grid over the box.  I screwed the 2X4's into the wood trailer sides (my trailer).

My toolbox weighs about what I guess MS's box is (1988 SnapOn side-by-side and fully loaded).

Re: Thursday is movng day

Don and I got it in the trailer by jacking up one end and then backing the trailer under it. Then used long 2x6 as lever to lift the tail end while pushing. After a couple of miscues, it went right in.

Getting it out was alot easier. I told the movers that the cash I was going to give them for a tip had been locked in the top drawer of the toolbox and I could not get to it until the box was out of my trailer. They grabbed the big ramp from their 18 wheeler and a very short time later, the box and my tractor were in the garage.  Work smarter, not harder!

New house has three car garage, and right now, NO cars can be parked inside.  I have got to get rid of more stuff, or get a new building built.

Will be happy to give my new address to anyone that would like to come by to visit. Just email.

Re: Thursday is movng day

I was curious Steve... What made you embark on this kind of move at this stage of life? Wouldn't you have put down roots in the Dallas area after all these years?

Probably to escape the rat race AKA Dallas!!

Re: Thursday is movng day

All one has to do is to go outside one night where MS has relocated.  That will quieten all the nay-sayers about moving from DFW.  Fortunately, I am about 30 minutes away from MS new home and I can easily testify it was a good move.

Re: Thursday is movng day

Have you SEEN Canyon Lake and the area around it? To use modern vernacular: OMG!
Austin is nearby for medical and social events. Deer that eat out of your hand on the back deck. Artists from all over with galleries and shows. MS can open a gallery for welded metalwork and make serious money. Check out Texas Monthly "Great Day-Drives in Texas" and you can stop in get MS to weld something for you.

Demographers say that unless college degrees and post-high school certificates increase dramatically, most of the upper-aged educated Texas Anglos will migrate to the three-county Austin-area over next 25 years. (Count me in!)

The way I see it, MS and Sherry are simply getting things set up for the rest of us.

Re: Thursday is movng day

We left L.A. in 1980 and moved to the "country" in Colorado.  Never have regretted it and those who came to the Bash last year pretty well understand why.   I'm very happy for Sherry and Steve and I bet they will enjoy their reclining years more than if they had stayed in the zoo.
