Hi everyone 68 mustang 289 c4 auto
Just came back from a ride parked in front of house and went to move car will not start.
1) car turns over and wants to start only if you leave the starter on and then you let go of the key and it stops.
Any ideas or thoughts?
Thanks Dave

Sounds like the ignition switch. Check the voltage on the switched 12v wire coming from the switch. You might try the wire connected to the coil.

Or the pink wire. In "start" the solenoid is providing the ign. voltage/current, Dave. When the key returns to the Run position ign power is from the ign switch via the pink wire.
Could also be a loose or corroded firewall connector.
Good luck, say HEY to Maria for us.

Checked ground ok
Checked pink wire at ignition all good
Can't check coil wire as I have a MSD Box 6201 6A digital, power runs threw the box.
When you turn the engine over the red light on the MSD box lights up.
I sent a email to Tec Service at MSD, two days to get back to you.
Bob do you think it could be a faulty ignition switch?

The switch has the following contacts
1. A - Accessory this is the stud mount in the center of the switch
2. B - Battery
3. I - Ignition
4. S - Start Terminal
5. P - Proof, note on the outside of the switch itself
6. G - Ground, this is the switch body itself
Switch Position Continuity exists only between
--------------- -------------------------------
Accesory B and A
Off No continuity between any two terminals
On B and I, B and A, A and I
Start B and S, B and I, S and I, P and G
Proof P and G, B and I
Proof Circuit - Switch Position between ON and START. At a point past the ON position and before the Start position there is continuity between the proof terminal and ground P and G (via the switch body). This continuity between P and G continuity is maintained through the START position and no continuity when returned to the Run position.

Not sure what MSD you're running. 6301 comes back as a crank trigger for an LS series GM engine.

Digital 6A 6201 my mistake

I had the pickup in the distributor go bad on me - MSD 6A box with an MSD distributor and an MSD Blaster 2 coil. I had to get a new pickup, pull the distributor, remove the drive gear, pull out the shaft and then install the new pickup. That is the only problem I have had with the MSD products for almost 10 years. Something to look at......?

I would bypass the MSD. Verify that its not the issue. I've had two ignition boxes fail on me over the years, leading me to consider that as the first possible culprit in a no start condition.

By passed the MSD box and still have no power, well it wasn't the MSD Box.
Went to start it, fires when key is in start mode only, let go of the key no power.
Turned key off ran a jumper line to positve side of coil, used the old screw driver trick crossed it over on starter regulator.
Car started up and ran perfect.
Found two wires running to the safety neutral switch that got burned a little by the headers by passed them. Still no power, well tomorrow is another day, I will start checking the other wires.

Neutral safety switch interrupts the "start" ckt only, Dave...no effect on the ignition "run" ckt. This is starting to sound like a bad switch or, if it's still in the circuit, a bad pink wire between the ignition switch and the firewall connector.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.
Pink wire under the dash had a small cut or short in it, the 30 amp fuse was good on contunity test in fuse box, but when taken out it had no continuity, but fuse looked good.
Changed the fuse and fixed the pink wire, car starts up again. Tomorrow I will put evey thing back together as it was bfore nice and neat as Bob remembers it, thanks again everyone.

Glad you got it sorted out, Dave. When are you going to get retarded so's Maria and you can come to a Bash? Or do I have to come to your neck o' the woods? Last time I did I thought they were gonna lock me up 'cause I admitted to owning a far-arm....at home, in Colo., not with me.
