just removed the timing case cover ( was leaking coolant next to fuel pump)
im in the process of cleaning all gaskets, some say use Rtv black silicone only, not the Rubber or cork gaskets at the lower cover around seal and oil pan,my car had both but not black RTV
are you guys using any type of gasket glue just to hold gaskets in place, with Black Rtv
I only want to do this once
whats your advice .

For me RTV is too slippery in some applications.
I have used Permatex high tack gasket cement since the flat head days, even on aircraft engines. They have a non hardening gasket goo that is also A/N specs.
Never had any issues. Your mileage may vary!

How did you make out with the carb Gasket?

I always use a gasket with a very thin smear of RTV silicone on both sides of it and a small squirt of RTV silicone to fill any gap in the corners where the lower seal mates up with the gasket.

Ditto Michael H.
Paper thin coating of RTV on timing cover gasket will do the trick. it cannot slip due to the flat surfaces being very rigid and big bolts holding it in.
Also same treatment on water pump gaskets. Also, do not forget... When you buy a new water pump, there is a gasket between the back cover of the pump and the pump housing. The back cover is held on with a couple of bolts from the factory. Remember to remove that cover, seal that gasket with paper thing RTV and then reinstall it prior to installing the pump to the timing cover.
And don't forget to put helicoils in all the timing cover bolt holes. It is alot easier on the workbench than it is after you strip out a water pump bolt.
