Didn't get very far watching it, but I would love to see a 1964 convertible with a 271 HP 289 weigh in at 2445! Think he's confused with a 64 Cobra.

The problem now is all the electronic junk crammed into new cars. That's why every year the sheetmetal seems to get thinner, there's more and more use of aluminum, plastic, urethane, and composites. Every Mustang now has PS, AC, PW, PL, PM, and then add in heated and cooled seats, etc. Consider the brakes are larger, as are the wheels. Nothing has really gotten any lighter. Emissions controls on the engine, EFI, etc. it all adds weight. In the '60s 3,500lbs was what a Chevelle weighed. That was a midsize car. Today any sedan is pushing 4,000lbs if not exceeding it. Its actually fairly impressive that they were able to get the GT350 down to that weight.

Just for comparison, the book that came with my 2017 GT350 quotes Shelby GT350 weights:
65 2,800
66 2,940
67 3,360
68 3,335
69-70 3,600
Interestingly, the same book never mentions the curb weight of the 2017 ! Some research says it weighs 3,700 pounds, with the R model at 3,650. A new four cylinder turbo Mustang comes in at 3,663.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
