Need some help with door/fender gaps

Could someone post or e-mail me a pic of the base of the A-post?  Trying to get my door and fender gaps set.  I'm setting the door and I'm not sure where or how close to the A-post it should set.  If it would be easier to shoot a pic or two on your phone and e-mail me I would sure appreciate it. My email is waltersma@aol.com.  There is a car show around here next weekend(the 10th)that I'll be able to go to and check out some Mustangs butt(TS) I would like to get a jump on it and start now.  The car I'm working on is a 66 Vert.      Also a pic of the gap between the fender and the cowl would be very helpful                                        Thanks,  Mike

Re: Need some help with door/fender gaps

Mike, are you using original fenders or after market?

There typically is no gap between the fender and the cowl.  The rest of the gaps are determined by the dimensions of the door.  Set the rear gap between door and quarter panel, and while doing that, the bottom of the door must be parallel to the top of the rocker panel.  Then the fender must go against the cowl, so there is usually not much variation.  The ones on my car with original fenders were almost touching the A-pillar.  Once you get the fender on and located as far back as it will go, you should be able to adjust the door horizontally so the door/fender and door/quarter are equal gaps.

If you position the fender forward of "as far back as it can go" then the hood will appear too short and the headlight doors will not align with the hood front corners.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Re: Need some help with door/fender gaps

Steve I'm using my original doors but both fenders are repops. I had both doors on and they looked pretty good, then I notice that one had a gap between the door and the A-post and the other was touching the A-post so wasn't sure which way I should shoot for.  I did see a 66 Mustang at the grocery the other day but didn't check post gaps, cuz I didn't know at that time that mine weren't the same. This car had one side of fender touching the cowl and the other side had a 3/16 gap between fender and cowl, so again wasn't sure what to shoot for.   Thanks Mike

Re: Need some help with door/fender gaps

Dave68 that is exactly what I needed, especially that third pic.  I've had this thing apart for I think about seven years so putting it back together has been a chore. I don't know anyone close by that has a Mustang that I can look at, so the next car show that I go to I will be taking plenty of pics. I wish that I would have bought two cars just so I could look at one while working on the other. Of course when I took mine apart I didn't take pics cuz I thought I would have it back together in about a year. My how time flies.       Thank you,  Mike

P.S.   Your car really looks great, very nice even gaps and a beautiful color.
