Took the 65 out for a cruise today

drove out in the country on some 2 lane highways for a couple hours.  Maybe drove 50 miles.  Stopped by the wife's job and talked to her for a bit and it started to rain so I jumped in and headed home.  Pulled into the garaged and shut it off.  I was behind my work van which sits next to the Mustang when the bottom radiator hose decided to let go.  Fortunately it just slipped off the water pump!!  Also thankful it did it at home and I wasn't near it when it let go of the 200+ degree antifreeze.  Sucks that it went all over my shop floor!!

The more you drive it, the better sorted out it will become.

Re: Took the 65 out for a cruise today

Glad you got it home before that happened.  That's the sort of thing that will put it on the trailer...and make a big mess on the car.
We took the Heap and the Falcon on about a two hundred miles cruise two weeks ago.  No major troubles but I noticed that when they pushed the Falcon we were seeing some oil smoke/smell from under the car.  Looks like the pan is leaking at the rear.  Other than that it was fine at speed.
As you know we ain't a-feared to drive the Heap.  I feel that driving these cars a few miles every day or so just guarantees, or at least enhances, reliability for longer trips.  The Falcon has been going back and forth to "work" for three weeks or so now.  The plan is for it to head to Wichita Kansas in mid July.

I agree with Bullet Bob about driving the cars.  I took a short cruise to Waco from Dallas and met some of the guys for a 2 day feeding frenzy since I had been on a diet for 5 months.  The new engine has a lot of giddy-up.  What fun.

Re: Took the 65 out for a cruise today

A few years back I had my upper hose blew off going 65 mph down the hwy.  You should of seen the white smoke rolling from my engine.  I was only a few miles from home so I drove it the rest of the way.  Got antifreeze in my Distributor and that was ruined.  It was a mess.  Lesson learned.  In the spring before I take it out I tighten all hose clamps and anything else that looks like I should check.. Im shocked at how much turn I can get in the hose clamps after running it all summer.  Steve69

Or just tighten them properly on the initial installation.

I think the  heat must loosen the clamps up.  I had them very tight.  Next spring there was some turn on the clamps.   I was surprised too.

Re: Took the 65 out for a cruise today

It seems like every time antifreeze gets into the alternator, next week I need a new one.
