I am finally to the point where I need to buy some tires.
I’m looking for a something with excellent traction and handling characteristics. I’m not too worrried about tread wear as the tires will likely need to be replaced due to age and dry rot before I’d get enough miles on them to wear them out.
I keep reading that a lot of the max performance tires state that they’re not recommended for temps “around freezing”. Although I will never drive in the dead of winter, I’ll probably drive into late fall as long as the roads are still clean and temps that time of year can easily be in mid 30s, so maybe a max performance summer tire isn’t the best choice.
I’ve been looking at the Yokohama S Drives, BF Goodrich Sport Comps and some Hankooks as they seem to get decent reviews and are priced decently.
What are people using that they’d recommend?

I presently have Sport Comps and they seem to be a good, quiet tire. Way more performance ability than the Heap will ever need, though. And, they are unidirectional which means they can only be "rotated" front to back. Before the Bash last year I bought a spare wheel and mounted a BFG Advantage TA. This seems to be the omni-directional, all season brother to the Sport Comp and is what I'll be putting all around before the bash trip next summer.
For most normal driving, you might consider the Radial TA. It's been around for ever and seems to be pretty popular. I had a set on the Heap before I went to the big brakes and 17" wheels and was very happy with them.

Funny you mention the TAs. I’ve used BFG TAs on a few cars over the years, but after the last set I had I swore I would never put them on another car I owned again. They were very hard, traction was terrible and they’d break loose with little to no warning. Looking for something a little more performance oriented this time.
I have different sized wheels front and back, so I can’t rotate front to back. I doubt I’ll find an omni-directional performance tire that I could flip side to side, but maybe there is one out there?

Sumitomo HRTZ III. Great grip, come in all the common sizes you need for 17s on a classic Mustang, and very reasonably priced.

Right now I'm on my second set of Radial T/A,s. Between them I had a set of BFG g-Force Sport comp-2,s.
The Sport Comps were awesome and I would have them again but they stopped making them in the sizes I needed. I even thought of going up a rim size to get the sizes I wanted but not worth the money.
The T/A,s are fine for the type of driving I do now.

I have Hancooks on my 66...235x45x17. It's my second set. They get good traction and wear well. Also reasonably priced.

I have used Toyo Proxes radials in 245/45/17 for several years and find them to be a great tire for my 68.

Thanks for all of the recommendations. When I was checking them out, I came across a tire that I had not previously looked at, the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500. They are a little cheaper than the BFG Sport Comps and were rated slightly higher than the BFGs by Tirerack.
And they're on sale now with a $60 rebate if you buy a set of 4, so I think I will give them a try.
