F150 towing question for a pal.....

F-150 Lariet with towing package........just bought a camper and wondering if an external tranny cooler would be a good idea "to help" tranny last/hold up a little longer
Camper would NOT exceed towing limit for truck.......just a little insurance for peace of mind while pulling.
Already know better than tow while in OD.
Thanx

Re: F150 towing question for a pal.....

Depends on whether it has the Medium/standard tow package or the Max. and what year.  If it has one of the two tow packages, it should already have an auxiliary oil cooler.  Provide the year and the package stated on the sticker and we can find more specifics.  Here is some discussion/confusion - https://www.f150forum.com/f118/what-included-tow-package-344612/

2001.   4wheel drive.    Thinks it has just std towing package
DoesNOT have a separate tranny cooler.   Just the one in bottom of radiator.
I'm think'in since the weigh doesn't exceed the limit on the truck....external cooler would just be added safety measure!?!

Re: F150 towing question for a pal.....

If he installs a nice one correctly there is no downside to an external cooler.  More searches show that a tow package for 2001 would have included a cooler - possibly in front of the bottom of the radiator.  But if it ain't there, go external.  If he's located down in the land of heat where you live, it may be wise for longevity anyway.  If he hasn't serviced the transmission in a while a filter and oil change won't hurt either since you have to break into the cooler lines for the cooler.

Re: F150 towing question for a pal.....

Always install an external trans cooler if planning to tow.  Cheap insurance.

I would also check to see if towing in OD is advisable.  For many years with the early OD autos the manufacturers always told you not to tow in OD.  Not sure on an '01; it could go either way, but definitely check that out, because if its not rated for it you will smoke the band or clutches that hold it in OD, and that'll be about it for the tranny.
