I am replacing the a/c compressor on my '65 Fastback with a 351-w motor and serpentine drive set-up. The current compressor is off a newer motor with a R134 compressor. The current one leaks between the halves of the compressor. I had my a/c technician change the system over to R12 since all the rest of the system is original '65 and R12. At the time of change over, he changed the oil in the compressor and now since I am replacing the compressor, the new one has pre-charged with 3 oz. of R134 oil in it and I need to put in replacing oil with the Ester oil for the R12. My question: since I didn't have a total replacement of all the parts, how much oil should I now put in the compressor without over charging the system since the oil that was already in the system migrated through out the system? The capacity of the compressor new is listed at 7 oz. It is a FS10 compressor from a newer Ford light truck with R134 system. Thanks for help. Jerry

My advice would be to convert back to 134. As you already know R12 is and has been out of production and is unreasonably expensive. In the near future it will not be available at all. If your new compressor is a 134 compressor all that's need is to flush the system, evacuate it and charge it. You may want to change out any old o-rings to comparable ones but it just doesn't make sense to go back to a 12 system.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have access to a lot of R12 and I don't plan on driving the car that much if I can get a good leak free system.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
