1965 mustang radio install

I am installing an aftermarket radio in my 65 FB with stock wiring. The new radio requires a constant 12v power source. What source under the dash is available for this (cig lighter?) or should I go to battery?

Thanks in advance!

Re: 1965 mustang radio install

On my stock 65, I have that always live wire run to the fusebox.  I removed the courtesy light fuse, tucked the stripped end of the wire in the fuse holder, and snapped the fuse back in.  If the lead to the radio has an inline fuse, it doesn't matter which end of the courtesy light fuse you stick the wire in.  If the wire to the radio doesn't  have an inline fuse, be sure to tuck the wire in the "fused" side of the fusebox.

Re: 1965 mustang radio install

In standard automotive wiring a solid yellow wire is typically 12V directly from the battery.  There are wires in the ignition circuit headlights, and instrument cluster that are 12V hot at all times.  The best way to be sure is to use a tester and see where you have 12V at all times.

Re: 1965 mustang radio install

I tied into the cigarette lighter wire on my '67.  It's been that way for 15 years now with no issues.

Re: 1965 mustang radio install

Not a thing wrong with using the cig lighter, courtesy lights, or even the brake light hot (which, if memory serves, are all sourced from the same point on the HL switch, but maybe I'm thinking Falcon) if you run it through a 2.5 amp fuse.  That circuit is only to keep the radio memory alive and it pulls very little current, Rick.
