67 mustasng C4 acting up

the car sat up for 5 years , now all of a sudden the trans is acting up. won't down shift when you come to a stop tries to start out in what seems to be third gear.  modulator changed and still that's not the problem, I was told it could also be the governor. I remember years ago hearing that the ford auto. trans. has issues after setting up for long periods of time, anyone else hear that? any suggestions besides a total rebuild? the owner has been driving the car around town for about 6 weeks and now after replacing a broken motor mount and trans mount this started.

After that long time of "sittin-up"  did he drain & change the fluid/filter?!
Might just be that simple

Yeah, any problem with an automatic the first step is to change the fluid and filter.  If the trans was rebuilt anywhere from the '90s onward just use regular Mercon III fluid.  If its original you need to use F-Type.  The original Ford frictions need tie F-Type, but starting in the '90s the aftermarket parts don't need it, and using it will actually make the trans shift very harshly.

Re: 67 mustasng C4 acting up

how does the fluid look ? I agree with above, change fluid and filter. See how it goes..

governor issue is simple to fix without even taking the tranny off the car.. governor is on the tail output shaft.. a sticky governor will cause issues, but a sticky goivernor may get unstuck with new fluid too ..

If it aint broke, I have'nt tried to "Fix" it yet!
