Installing aftermarket gauges in 1967 cluster

I'm looking to upgrade my gauges and don't really care for the aftermarket clusters they offer and would rather have a high quality gauge I can count on like Autometer.

Anyone install some Auto meter gauges in a 67 or 68 instrument panel?  any advice or pics ?

I have seen the cheap plastic supports that sell and heard they aren't much good and I also see Scott Drake now sells a bezel that you can install gauges from the front side. Not crazy how they look and would rather have something more similar to stock.

thanks

Re: Installing aftermarket gauges in 1967 cluster

I did it for the same reasons you want to.  The full clusters were too expensive, and I did not like the gauges.  I used Autometer gauges with simple black faces.

I made a rear backing plate from 1/8" thick aluminum.  The plate bolts to the back of the bezel and provides a flat surface to tighten the gauge brackets to.  I took the bezel and used a die grinder to enlarge the holes until the gauges just fit.

A couple of tricks are to make sure to use tunnels for the indicator lights like the stock cluster, otherwise you get light bleed and it looks bad.

I just reworked a stock cluster harness and used the stock wiring and the Autometer senders.  Works quite well, and got the look I wanted.

Re: Installing aftermarket gauges in 1967 cluster

Thanks Rudi that's pretty much what I'm looking to do.

Tach and Speedo 5" what size are the small gauges ?

I am going to install the American Auto Wire Harness as well so wiring would be like what you have done.

I'm assuming you had to do some grinding to the back side of the bezel to get the gauges to fit. Does the autometer gauges have their bezel fitting against the instrument bezel or does the glass fit against the back of the bezel ?  Does the ring on the bezel show or just the gauge dial.

thanks for any info, Mike

Re: Installing aftermarket gauges in 1967 cluster

I installed Auto Meter gauges in my 66. I used a dremel tool to enlarge the openings being very careful not to go to far. The plastic mounting brackets wouldn’t work so I fabbed some from aluminum flat stock. I bought a 12 pin prewired connector and wired it so it can easily be removed.

The small gages are 2 1/16" and they are for the AAW upgrade that I have.
I did a post a while back on how the bezel was modded but can't seem to locate it. Both sizes of gages mount in from the front, the Autometer gages bezel shows.

Re: Installing aftermarket gauges in 1967 cluster

5" speedo and tach, 2-5/8" for the others.  The gauges fit in from the front of the bezel, not behind.  You can use the smaller gauges and have to grind less off the bezel, but I looked at both. and ultimately the 2-1/16 gauges just looked too small for my taste when sitting. next to the 5" gauges

Like BillyC, I started with one of the plastic backers, but it was a joke and would never have worked, so I went aluminum.
