In Mustang 360 I was reading an article spotting differences between a 65 and a 66...
I thought I knew all that.
But no!
Now I’m confused about back up lights on my ongoing project of April 65 FB GT(A).
Should I have them or not???
And if one day I finally buy a Rally pack, was the « low profile » already available in April 65 when the1st 5 cluster dash came out? And V8 should be 8000rpm right?

I've never seen a 65 Mustang with back up lights. That does not mean they were not available as an option or on a GT. If they came on a GT and you do not have them, try checking for their wiring under the back valence. A PO could have deleted them.
That said, I would install them as a nighttime aid in backing. I do not know what that entails, but it will involve a bunch of wiring work as well as two holes cut in your rear valence. - You could check a 66 factory wiring pamphlet for the exact wiring needed. Wiring is available virtually everywhere in Mustangdom.
If you want stay stock, leave it alone.

You really need the build sheet to know for sure since it was an option at the time.
Little indicators that point to factory installed lights is a knockout hole in the small divot behind the shifter access hole on 3-4 speed manual cars. Can be viewed from underneath. This was for wiring.
On automatic cars there is an access plug for a 4 wire connector on the firewall. Cars with no backup lights had a little jumper wire there along with the NSS. Looking at other cars will help clear up that.
My 64.5 came with backup lights.

My 64.5 had them too. When it was time to replace the rear valence, I went without them.

I had a 66 coupe so I have some lights available...
But as I got rearended my valance is dead.
Now that I’m rebuilding a 65, I don’t know what valance to buy.
If my April 65 FB GT is not supposed to have them I will not add them. I’d rather hide something invisible underneath as a backup help... but then I need à valance with just 2 holes for the trumpets, not 4 holes.
So you guys confirm that my car should not have these lights?

A 1965 factory GT car should not have back-up lights. They were an extra cost option in 1965. It also should not have rear bumper guards (in the way of exhaust trumpets), rocker panel moulding or power brakes. It should also be an A or K engine code car.
As for the Rally-Pac, through very early 1966 the proper one should be the high profile one. 6K tach for the A code engine and 8K tach for the K code engine. So it’s possible to have an early 1966 factory Rally-Pac that is high profile. Factory 1965 Rally-Pacs came without the words across the middle. I haven’t seen those reproduced.
Apparently the 64 1/2 factory Rally-Pacs DID have the words in the middle, the factory 65’s (or most, did NOT), and the dealer installed and parts counter ones, again, DID have the words on them.
Since, I think, most of the Rally-Pacs were dealer or parts counter sales, for your car, a high profile repro with a 6K tach is correct as can be.

Thanks a lot!
So I will not install backup lights.
For Rally Pac, when I’ll be ready to spend the cash...
I will then go for high profile 6000 as my car is an A code.
Looks like only Scott Drake makes one that can be compatible with my MSD 6AL...
all black or chrome rings around the gauges?
And I will use sand paper to remove the chrome letters « RallyPac » gently.

I believe there are various tach adapters from MSD that allow the use of their ignitions with factory style tachs. Another possibility, as not sure how the. SD rally packs are in terms of quality. Their other stuff is pretty hit or miss anymore.

My car came without back-up lights. I recently installed them and it is not that difficult. I would also recommend considering LED LIGHTS WHICH ARE AN ENHANCED SAFETY FEATURE.
Offline
Considering I got rearended by night with my coupe... definitely I think I’ll go for LED in the tail lights.
LED bulbs?
I’ve seen that they offer them in white or in red... what’s the way to go?
I read somewhere about blinker issues, what about it?

Some bulbs and kits are better than others. I have not done rear tail lights yet but my experience with instrument lights is more than I wanted. A place called HiPo parts has the best factory color LED dash lights in my opinion.
As for the tail lights do a search for LED lights and several threads will give you a lot of info.

Unless you want sequential these are great, super easy to install, basically plug-n-play.
You can probably get them locally through Dallas Mustang.
Took maybe 20-30 minutes to really brighten up turn signals/brake lights.
Steve Buzek has LED backup lights on his 67, more like mini headlights on the rear when in reverse.

I am sold on LED's. I bought my tail lights/ brake lights at CJPonyParts.com a couple of years ago. You will also need the flasher that is recommended for LED's. I recently installed LED back-up lights and LED turn signals from Glen and Steve Buzik. They go by "Steve's Mustang Parts". Great guys to deal with. The LED's are many times brighter than incandescent. You won't be disappointed.

So when you say LED, you’re talking about the big LED board C5ZZ-LED ?
Or about the LED bulbs SD-1157-RFB-RD?
Is that the way to go?
Another question for specialists:
About Fog lights... why are there some white ones and some amber ones?
What’s the difference?
What’s factory installed on an early GT?

ive seen many many 65s with reverse lights..i always just figured maybe they added them?...
Offline
True.
Now that I’m paying attention it’s even pretty rare to see any early stang without them.
But I bought my car as a puzzle and rear valance was missing.
It’s an April 65 real GT, A code, standard interior, no AC.
As it’s one of the very first GT, I would like it to look as close as factory as possible...
(even if I’m going Caspian instead of Rangoon LOL)
Hard decision !

Fog lights...Amber lenses are a modern iteration. Correct would be the clear/white ones. But, as with anything Mustang, make it yours and be happy.

Good !
(As I have 2 pairs of clear fogs that’s very good news)
So, for led?
Simple led bulbs or rectangular plate with led lights everywhere ?
Offline
Again, do a search on this forum. There are a couple of threads with lots of experienced recommendations. But to kind of answer your question, it depends on its use. The simple single LED “bulb” will shine directionally like a flashlight. Probably good for turn signals. The bulbs or plates with LEDs in every direction are meant to shine like a 100W bulb with no lamp shade. These are also brighter. Probably better for the tail lamps. All the light assemblies have refractors that refract (reflect?) the light out towards the lens. Brighter is better these days.
Edit to add: The LED strips or boards with multiple LEDs are probably what you were thinking of when you wrote “plates”? Like the kind in tail lamp assemblies, sequential or not? I was thinking plate as in the metal headlamp LEDs from Mustang Project.

Not quite true on clear fog lights only. Actually both were available though amber was less common.

OK! So I ran across a YouTube video of old Mustang commercials. There they were. Amber fog lights on a ‘67. Holy frijoles. Never noticed before.
