1966 Mustang Coupe, 1988 5.0 HO Swap, T5z, 620 Springs, 4.5 mid eye leaf springs, 1 inch spacers all four, 11.25 disc brakes front and back.
Has anyone successfully run 245/45/17 on all wheels? If so what is your setup? I've seen the tire fitment charts and lots of discussion boards. 2 guys said they did it w/ some mods, 1 guy said he did it w/ no mods, and 4 guys said no way it will work.
I'd like to get the same tire on all 4 wheels to be able to rotate front to back w/ directional tires. Also get a significant rebate for buying 4 tires, makes keeping just one spare a lot easier too.
Otherwise my plan is to go 225/45/17 in the front and 255/45/17 in the back for a staggered setup. But that really locks in the tires and cost more. I don't plan on putting more than 5k miles a year at absolute most and no chance I am doing any kind of aggressive driving but still want to be prudent.

What fits depends on some other factors.
Has your car been lowered? Springs, Arning/Shelby drop, etc. If so those 245's will not fit. You have to have a stock height to have any chance.
I run 215/55x16's up front. I could not get 225's to work up front without excessive tire scrub in the corners. I have both lowering springs and the Arning drop. And my car has always ridden lower than other Mustangs - I do not know why. I also remember over the years seeing them at a number of ride heights from boat tail to very nice rake.
It's a matter of your specific vehicle.

I wouldn't worry about the staggered sizes. The tires will go bad from age long before they wear out. Typically you can get maybe 7 years from a set of tires, then they should be replaced for safety.
I run Summitomo HRTZ IIIs on my fun cars. They are quite reasonable, quiet, and seem to provide decent handling and traction. A set for my Mustang is like $350 plus like $100 for mounting an balancing.
I would not count on being able to run a 245/45R17 on the front of a '66. I am running 245/40R17s on my '67 because once I finally did the Shelby/Arning drop my 245/45R17s rubbed, and I'd already tweaked the fenders as much as I could to get them to fit without the drop.
In the rear, I'll defer to those who have the earlier cars. I'm running a 275 on my '67 on a 9" rim, which just barely fits, and I'm actually considering going a little smaller or making some mods to get some more clearance because the harder I push the car I've encountered some rubbing that wasn't immediately evident on installing the wheels/tires.

If you are on VMF, I think Ryan Sterling (RyanSterling66) runs 245/45/17 all around on his 66 fastback.

I am using 17x8's all around with 4.75" backspacing. I have 245/45's in back and with this backspacing and with rolled fender lips, it is tight. With some more backspacing - 1/2" or so it would be OK on the outside but close on the inside with a convertible. 255's might fit but it depends a lot on your backspacing and I'm not sure what you gain. Without rolling the lips, things are going to be tight and you don't want to cut a tire.
In front, I am running 225x45's. These are also a bit tight with these wheels. I clear well in back but in the front edge in particular it is close. Much depends here on your alignment setup and upper control arm shimming. I think more than a a few folks are running 225's so it is certainly done. Based on some advice from a neighbor I did a fender modification that is not an option for a completed/painted car. I cut a thin wedge half-way around the fender lip to give me the clearance I need in front. I will also be rolling the fender lips when I have completed my rust repairs. The first picture shows my initial clearance on the front corner and the final after the mod. This area is a common area of contact with wide tires and/or lowered suspension.

I mocked up the 245/45/17 on the front tires. This is w/ a one inch spacer. The upper control arm sits about a 1/16" from the wheel. There is a balance weight that knocks it as it goes around too. BUT, I haven't done an alignment and the wheels sit w/ an extreme negative camber (tilted in). I didn't put any spacers in when I redid the front suspension. I imagine once it's corrected I should have at least 1/4" clearance. With that said, the plan is to go with 225/45/17 in the front and 255/45/17 in the back to avoid any trouble.

I'm fine w/ directional tires, but not really keen on asymmetrical tires. If I can get the Summitomo HRTZ II in the size I want I'll probably go w/ those or BFGOODRICH G-Force Sport Comp 2.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
