I see "talk" about an AOD engine plate. What is the deal about them? I have one that came off of me 70 Mustang 3 speed and it fits on the AOD that I have. It's steel and about 1/16 in thick. Can I use it or do I need different one? The 3 speed bolts to the 302 and the 351W that I have. I took it out and put an C4 in its place. Now I want to take that out and put in a AOD.

I would say that if it fits the trans and the starter aligns...it probably is okay unless there's something going on that I don't know about....very likely.

When I did the C4 to 4R70W swap, the engine plate for my 351W fit with no modifications. I was also able to use the same starter too. The AOD is also a straight bolt on to the SBF engines.

The vast majority of 351w engines came with automatics, so any one you find will probably have an automatic plate. When I got my 351w, its engine plate would not work, but the old 289 stick plate did. Virtually all SBF's have the same bolt pattern but the plates are different.
It's been too many years for me to remember what the difference is.

Automatic and manual transmissions sometimes have different starters. Two bolt vs three bolt. That might be the difference. What about the thickness of the plate and aluminum vs steel?
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
