Buttoning up my electrical on my 65 289 coupe

So I'm waiting on my order for some last electrical connectors to finish my custom wiring harness. Now I need to buy my upgraded starter and alternator. I'd like to make sure I have the right years for the correct parts.
94 ford 5.0 starter
94 Taurus 3.0 alternator

For the starter, if you are looking for the factory lightweight starter, any starter from a '92-'95 5.0 Mustang is the same and will work. 

I'm not 100% sure on the alternator, but that sounds right.  There may have been some options in terms of amperage output, so be mindful of that.  I think there are differences in the case between the base and high amp models, which is worth knowing if you're junkyard scrounging.

Early 289's used different starters between stick and auto trannys.  Parts store often have the part numbers switched, so be careful.

Also, make sure your block plate, starter and flywheel match.  Block plates are different too.

The  60's Mustang Alternator has mounting points that are clocked at 180 Deg  and about 7 inches apart. If I remember correct the Taurus is clocked @ 180 deg  and about 8 1/2 inches apart. This requires an extension made for the mounting bracket., I think I used a 94 Mustang 5.0 alternator. The size and mounting points are very similar to the early Mustang.


If this forum can't fix it, it isn't broke.

Cool I did a quick rock auto search it looks like the Taurus used different alternators on 3.0 engine. The bigger 3.8L uses what looks like to be the larger case alternator. The 3.0 Taurus uses 7 o'clock clocked position. 3.8,5.0 mustang's uses the same alternator and part number but list the mustang alternators with a 10 o'clock clock position. The 3.0,3.8,and the 5.0 look like the small case they even use the same part number.

The ‘93 Taurus alternator was clocked at 180 degrees just like the 64-66 alternator. The ‘93 standard size was 135 amps. The ‘93 bolts right in. I have seen several references that state an extended adjustment bracket is required, but I used the stock bracket on my 65 and 66. I also used the two groove pulley off the early alternator. Please use a Mega fuse coming directly off the alternator.

Awesome thanks for the post much appreciated. I plan on using a firewall stud connector on the side by the shock tower then branch off with a fused 175amp lead for my alternator.

So I decided I wanted to add an emergency flasher to my  mustang. I realize Cjponyparts sells a replacement for the mustang's.  I thought I'd add a custom touch and in addition add the emergency flasher indicator light as well that ford used on other cars the same year.
