Anyone know how this comes apart?

1996 Mustang shifter.  Anyone have any experience removing the T-handle from the lever arm?  This one had a hole in the plastic part of the handle, so I assumed there might be a set screw or something.  I probed all around with various allen wrenches, then took a 3/16" drill bit to it to clear away the plastic, but there is apparently no fastener there.  I want to see if I can install the 2010 shift lever on the 96 lever arm for my 56 F100.
Any ideas, before I commit to hacking on it?

Re: Anyone know how this comes apart?

Didja try pushing in on the spot where the hole is...maybe a spring loaded pin.

Re: Anyone know how this comes apart?

According to StangNet there is one small Allen set screw (like a 66?).  Get a maggot fryer...look closer.
Don't hack on it, you'll hose up the lock-release cable mechanism.

Re: Anyone know how this comes apart?

The one on youtube is a different year. No little screw like that one has. Cannot find a set screw. Looks like I will have to start cutting.  Carefully.

Re: Anyone know how this comes apart?

Just spent half a day finding my 95 shift lever, (surprising what else I found).
It takes a 5/64 allen key, in the same location as yours.

Re: Anyone know how this comes apart?

On my 97 T-Bird,  push the button in while in neutral. Then stand up on top of it and pull straight up with all you got. It will come loose and you will hit your self in the chest.

Sounds like a possibility. I sure cannot find any set screw in there.

Maybe I will heat the plastic first to help it let loose.

Really would prefer steering column shifter instead on the truck, but can’t beat Ford parts, especially for something that gets used as much as a shifter.

With the GM floor shifter that was in it when I bought it, you would have to find the shift hande, stick it on the shifter snd then push the button to move the lever. Probably a GM theft deterrent invention...

Re: Anyone know how this comes apart?

If you want a column shifter, what about a tilt steering column from a 73-79 Ford Truck?? Or an Ididit column?

Re: Anyone know how this comes apart?

I have a torch, hack saw, cutoff wheel, bfh, and some pb blaster at my disposal.  It WILL come off!

Already have an aftermarket tilt column, but for floor shift. I think I will wind up building a custom console and use the floor shifter.  New IDIDIT column with shifter is over $600.
