Re: 67 mustang steering column

X2 on that.  When I get around to it I'll be going with one or the other.  I'd avoid the stock tilt columns due to complexity and cost.  The only downside to the aftermarket ones are that most are GM based, so they aren't exactly plug and play.

Re: 67 mustang steering column

Ididit offers a plug and play. I used it in my 67.

Re: 67 mustang steering column

Factory option column was TILT-AWAY, not tilt, so avoid that.  It simply tilts to the right and up to make it easier to get in and out of the car.  Steering wheel driving position is not adjustable.  As SteveG said, Ididit makes one with Ford connections and is the best quality, albeit pretty expensive.  Think of it this way, though... you will be using it 100% of the time when you are driving your car, so do it once and do it right.  Avoid the $200 - $300 versions that are Chinese copies.  They do not hold up well.  There was one in my 56 F100 when I bought it.  It has slop in the internal u-joint as well as a lot of wear at the bottom plastic bushing.  It needs the MustangSteve lower steering column ballbearing shaft kit installed to replace the worn out plastic bushing.

FYI, IDIDIT (steering columns) are made right by (Tecumseh, MI) where the Bash is being held. You could save on shipping by attending and picking one up.

Yes, the truck has the cheapo version.  No name on it, so I assume it is the cheapo.  Plastic lower bushing, same as what Borgeson uses in their kits.  Lower ball bearing conversion will fix either one.

Re: 67 mustang steering column

My 70 stock tilt is up and down and is adjustable to various heights while driving. However it has the key in the column. The 69 has it in the dash. Both are pretty rare. I read that they will work for the 67.  West Coast Classic Cougars might have one. Can't imagine the price though.

Re: 67 mustang steering column

I bought a 68 Ididit column because its collapsible for my 67. I had to find the support brackets on Ebay to bolt it to the dash. Wiring for the turn signals and horn was not a problem. They also offer versions that are shorter for a car equipped with a rack or a Borgenson conversion.

The aftermarket column will be about $600 to $650 to turn around and remove or modify for an electric assist conversion where a kit could be more than $1000. There are some guys here on the forum that have created the electric version, not sure what they spent in time or $$$.

Re: 67 mustang steering column

I was looking for a tilt column for my '65 and I was NOT going to pay $400-$500 for an Ididit/Flaming River. I started looking around in the junk yard and the "bricknose" F series ('87-'91) looked like a candidate. I paid $40 for it and spent maybe an additional $10 for odds and ends to complete it. I did a write-up on VMF.

My factory 67 tilt away column is indeed adjustable for driving position.

Re: 67 mustang steering column

that's true.  I had a factory tilt in my 68 and it was adjustable as you described.........strike 2....
