tie rod sleeves

In converting my 1966 coupe steering from 6cyl to v8 I ran across a problem with the right (driver) side spindle. The hole for the outer tie rod is bigger the the '66 tie rod end.I bought the spindles on line since the are no longer being manufactured. which one of the tie rod sleeves do I need to order to make this work.

Re: tie rod sleeves

65-66 I-6 and V8 tie rods both have the exact size taper stud size.  The six cylinder ones have 3/8" threads and the V8 have 7/16" threads on the stud.  So, if you have 65/66 V8 spindles, the original tie rods should fit fine if you use a sturdy washer under the nut.

So, it sounds like you may have purchased a 65/66 left V8 spindle, since the tie rod fit, but the passenger side spindle is either worn out or the wrong spindle.  Can you get the part number off the vertical part of the spindle?

You do NOT want to mismatch spindles between 65/66 and 67 or later years as the radius arm angle is different and the steering will be out of whack.  Installing 65/66 V8 spindles on six cylinder steering linkage will be terrible enough by itself without adding different ackerman angles from side to side.  Your car can feel very unstable at just about any speed.  You really need to convert to V8 steering parts to do it right, using 65/66 V8 spindles that match.

Above are 65/66 V8 spindles.  One identifying feature is the near vertical sides on the backing plate mounting surface.

Above are 67-69 drum brake (also 67 disc brake( V8 spindles.  They are same on six cylinder cars, but the six had four lug hubs and no disc brake option.)  Note the inset sides between the backing plate mounting bolts.

And just for grins, the spindles below are 65/66 six cylinder spindles.  Note the radius arms are way different than the V8 parts.  That is why mixing components will make the car handle weird.

So, the bottom line is this:  In order to tell you what adapters you might need, I need to know what year/car spindles you are trying to install.  It sounds like you got two different ones.

Re: tie rod sleeves

Sorry for my mistake, it is the left side spindle that I am having a problem with. The pictures you posted for the '64 thru '66 spindles look identical to the ones that I have. The part number on the back of the spindle (as well as I can make it out) is 6d3108. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

The year model of the car is a 1966.

Re: tie rod sleeves

If your spindles are indeed 65/66 V8 spindles, the tapered tie rod stud is the same as a six cylinder spindle, except the threads are smaller on the six.

Your spindle is either damaged inside the hole (not uncommon if someone did not tighten the tie rod properly) or they are a different year.

Your spindles had the straight vertical sides where the brake backing plate bolts up?  If that part number is actually C6.... then they are 67-69 spindles and the TRB-6567 adapters would work.  If the spindle hole is oversized from wear, then your only two options are to have it reamed for a larger size or replace the spindle.

Re: tie rod sleeves

The trb6570 adapter fits the 65-66 tie rods, which are the smallest tie rods on any year Mustang. If they are too big for the tie rods, your car must have something really unusual for tie rods, or maybe just not pushing the adapters far enough onto the tie rods.  If the trb6570 is too small for the spindles, you probably have 1975-1980 Granada spindles, which are a little larger than the 70 spindle hole your adapters are designed for.  The Granada part number is on the spindle vertical part between the two ball joints.  If undamaged, you can return the adapters for a pair of trb-65gr adapters. They have the snallest possible ID and the largest possible OD.

Pics of your parts would he me toidentify them, even if all you show are the calipers and how they mount.
