Ford 3G Alternator Dimensions-Small Case

Just installed my engine recently and i'm using a March Serpentine Belt set up that has my AC compressor on passenger side(low) with the Alternator above it.

I'm using a large case 3G alternator, can't remember what car it was made for but remember its a large case.

Well I just tried to install the total control monte carlo bar and it hits the alternator as it sits a little high using this set up.

I'm wondering if a small case would give me more room for the bar?  Anyone have dimensions on the small case?
The bar is hitting right where the top bolt mounts and I need about an inch more clearance.

The mounting ears are still gunna be 7" apart.

In 'merican that's about 1/2" larger in diameter.  5.3" vs. 5.8".

Re: Ford 3G Alternator Dimensions-Small Case

Looks like my spacing for the mounting ears is over 8" so I'm thinking finding a different alternator might be a solution.  After looking all over the web I have found some info that there is a 7" spacing and an 8.25" which is what I believe I have.

Re: Ford 3G Alternator Dimensions-Small Case

Any reason you felt you needed the large case?  I know they're higher amp, but do you really need it?  I run the 90 amp small case and it works just fine for my car (electric fan, stereo with two amps, power windows).

Re: Ford 3G Alternator Dimensions-Small Case

I will have dual electric fans but nothing else out of the ordinary.

I didn't envision the large case causing me a problem but that's what happens when you start modifying and using lots of aftermarket stuff.

I wanted serpentine because of the ac compressor and alternator are prone to slipping especially the alternator.

The alternator does sit kind of high but I do like the ac compressor down low on the passenger side it will clean things up with the lines etc. Plus if you ever need to pull an engine you can unbolt it and just move it out of the way.  I was thinking about running the lines in the wheel well area then coming thru the fender apron right where the compressor is.  Maybe even a bulk head there for the lines but then decided to much work and not really necessary.

Re: Ford 3G Alternator Dimensions-Small Case

If the small case one fits I'd just run that.  I'm sure you can probably sell the big case one for what the small case on will set you back.

1fasting, your pic shows 2 large case 130A alts.
The difference being the spread of the mounting ears. I THINK the larger is a truck application.
I'd probably be looking for a junk alt, and swap the front case over.
I'm using a 130A on mine, cos it was factory on my donor car.

Re: Ford 3G Alternator Dimensions-Small Case

For what it's worth, I'm running a serp system and found a 3g alt on a 2003 mustang at the local pull a part. It was a newly rebuilt alt and I got a deal on it. Mounting points are 7 inches apart and the case measures 5.5 inches across.
