Anyone have seal suggestions for 31 spline axles in a small bearing housing?
Thanks for your time,
Peter

For a seal, I would take the axle shaft with me to the local auto parts.
For an axle shaft, we need to know what you’re working on!!!

Ford 9” small bearing housing with 31 spline axles.
Bearing is 2.834”x1.562”
Not a normal small bearing with a 28 spline...
Considering going with these to eliminate the seal, but I am not sure they will work with the MS cobra brake retainers...

Do your axles have the pressed-on sleeve where the seal interfaces with the axle? Seal depends on whether or not you have that type axle. My truck has 31 spline small bearing 9" with the sleeves. I got the seals from OReilly. NOT the normal 28 spline small bearing seal. NOT the normal 31 spline big bearing seal. There is a third one that is just right if you have the axles with the sleeve. Sorry I do not have the seal number.

My 67 has a small bearing housing. I bought Jegs brand 31 spline axle shafts and used bearings from Oreilly's, part number BCA RW207CCRA. The dimensions are off form what you posted. The inner seal part number I had is not good. It took a trip to the parts house to come up with the right one.
That's a neat idea from Strange, you had best call them to find out why their retainer plates are required. The Ford design has worked well fro many years. Is it worth it to spend $15 more per bearing and $100 on retainer plates to eliminate $8 worth of seals?

AH-HA!
Well, I know why it was leaking now...
Drumroll...
I had seals in it for a large bearing size shaft, and my 31 spline axles from strange or moser had the small bearing journal. The seal surface was riding in air...
So, Incorrect seals for me, but correct seals if you are running the larger diameter axle with the goofy large axle to small housing conversion bearing...
National 9363-S
Those ones are about 2.25” od, and would seal on a 1.562” shaft.
National 9569-S is what I need to seal up on the 1 3/8” ish (small) shaft in a small bearing housing.
At least it was a cheap mistake.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
