lower radiator hose spring

With the hoses available today it seems none come with the spring in the lower hose.  Is it necessary or wise to run a spring in the lower hose to assure it doesn't collapse under suction?

Where can I find the spring?  seems only place online is CJ's west coast and don't really feel like waiting forever for it to arrive to florida.

Re: lower radiator hose spring

Springs are cheap insurance.  I've never had one of the new hoses that don't come with the spring cause a problem personally, but like I said, cheap insurance.

Wire coat hanger, cut and straightened, then wrapped around a broom handle.

Re: lower radiator hose spring

I too made mine form a length of gas welding rod wrapped around a 1 1/4" socket.  Butt, as others (Hornman I think) have warned me, that plain steel will rust even in coolant so you want to check it every year or so.  Which reminds me......

Re: lower radiator hose spring

Mayhaps stainless steel TIG filler rod would be a good choice for this application.

Re: lower radiator hose spring

Radiator hose springs are made out of stainless/spring steel. Anything less than that, you are just kidding yourself. Buy a commercial spring, they are cheap. However, if you have access to stainless steel spring wire and have the equipment and skills, by all means make your own.

You DO need a spring in the lower radiator hose!

Re: lower radiator hose spring

Get the correct wire, eat a can of spinach, wrap the wire around the correct diameter pipe, socket, etc, pull the spring to the correct length, then give the radiator hose a springectomy....

Re: lower radiator hose spring

Guess I'm to lazy.  LOL   I found a stainless one on line for under $10.  At least it will hold up for a good long time.

Re: lower radiator hose spring

I used galvanized 12 gauge fencing wire.  Been there a couple of years and so far so good.  Shouldn't be a problem if you run antifreeze, which has corrosion protection.
