While I have the 67 up in the air on jack stands I noticed the valve to ram hoses are looking tired. Anybody have a favorite brand or supplier for these hoses?
I also thought I would replace the hi/lo pressure hoses also. Due to headers I ran the big block hoses on the bottom side with the fancy bracket that holds them to the frame. My high pressure hose is a two piece unit. All the replacements are one piece. What part numbers do I need to replace the two-piece hi pressure hose.

I think I found the pressure hose on Rock Auto. 390 powered 67 use the Gates 354470 on the valve end and Gates 361410 for the pump end.
ACDELCO has hoses also, more money. Gates or ACDelco?
Please stop me if I'm wrong.

I've had good luck with Gates hoses over the years.

Sheesh Gary, power steering? While it's up in the air pull all the power stuff off and I'll send you my spare manual parts.

I've had good luck with Gates belts and hoses too.
If they don't leak too bad, do you really want to mess with it??

If I remember correctly, 67 was the year the ram hoses could be 1/4" or 5/16"

I would but changing out the spear-O-matic box with the engine in place would be a real pain.

Well I splurged and purchased two of everything, well 4 of the little hoses that go from the valve to the ram. Little hoses were Gates and Edlemann while the high pressure hoses (two piece) are Gates and ACdelco. All of the hoses are made in Mexico and came packaged identically with different writing on the bags. The hoses were different also, but not by much. I really think all the hoses came from the same manufacturer in Mexico. There were slight differences. I used the ACdelco hoses for the high pressure and the Edlemann for the slave cylinder. Those little hoses are damn near impossible to install. What was Ford thinking? I still need to get a short piece of 3/8 hose for the return and fill it up and leak check.
The old hoses were 10 years old, or more and had at least 50K miles on them. They looked tired. Better to replace in my shop than on the way to this years Bash.

A big issue with O/E PS is the hoses. If you don't get the right ones you will eventually get a leak. The two short ones are not the same, the bends on each one are different.. Trying to fit the wrong ones will result in you going to the brink of madness. I would only trust hoses from NPD. Most other suppliers hoses I have seen have the same bends on both.
The next issue is that a special clamp must be installed on the other two steel pressure lines, set ups without the clamp will cause more leaks.
My O/E set up was leak free for over 15K miles when on a lark,I removed it for EPAS
Pictures below.
See the difference! These were NOS. AFAIK NPD has had them duplicated.
The very important dedicated clamp.

Gary
I was able to remove/install mine with the engine in the car.
Yes it was a PITA....clutch cable, plugs, wires,LH header, engine/motor mount, oil filter, sway bar removed.
Almost...sumped oil pan...disconnected RH engine mount, loosen transmission mounts and pushed engine to side just a tad.
The assembly finally comes out near radiator support...pushed radiator hose out of way.
TA DA...IT’s OUT😁
Rudi is correct about the control hoses.
First time I changed hoses, I used two of the generic hoses...ROYAL PITA
This time I used the specific supply and return ( both by Edelman)...smooth as butter.
BTW...my factory Power steering is working like new.
I’m not a “Wanderer” any more.
Thanks for your help Gary.

REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
