Re: Cooling System Leak

Bob, ya probably know that the two large bolts at the rear of the pan don't go into blind holes, and need thread sealant .... but thought I'd mention it.

Ya, no kidding. Multiple rear seals, Felpro and Cometic, and the MS RTV only trick on the pan, 2 different brand one piece pan gaskets, and it still leaks.

But it only makes a mess when driven at speed. I can idle it while parked, and even take it up to 2k rpm and it will only leak a minor amount, and minor leakage on the floor after shutting it off.

When taken up to speed, the oil goes all over the headers and floor, and leaks a bunch after shutting it off. Those headers were freshly painted before taking it on a 10 mile run.

I'm at my wits' end.

IF we wuz'a talk'in Harley Davidson'ez this would be a perfectly normal situation.
No worries mate! (thanx Barry)....this is why God made kitty litter...

Re: Cooling System Leak

Do you have proper pcv system installed?  Wonder if you have some blowby pressurizing the crankcase.

Re: Cooling System Leak

Symptoms of :
Leaks only at higher RPM
Leaks after shut off

Could also be valve covers.

Be aware of too long bolts bottom out before clamping down. Or bent valve cover.
I cannot really see the pic well on my phone, but the rear pan seal showing globs of rtv in front of the primer gray block plate/inspection cover is a bit concerning.  If the rtv in the seal groove is applied like the excess that has oozed outward, that might be a big source of a leak. There is nearly a 1/4” of rtv that has to fill that groove 100% and has to mate with the pan 100%.  Obviously any gap will leak.

Re: Cooling System Leak

Well....you know the rear main has a slight leak, but I don't see how it will get to the headers from there. Is there oil on the back of the block where it mates with the intake? or valve covers? Is that oil hanging off the starter?

What have you used for sealant? Ford used TA-31 on the truck diesel engines. The stuff holds great. Comes in a caulk tube, so break out the caulk gun for applying. Pick it up at the Ford dealer or online.

Re: Cooling System Leak

Thanks Steve. I thought about the valve covers and checked them already. I also thought it could be the Melling HV oil pump, so I changed it out to a standard pump.

That primer gray look at the inspection cover is foot spray powder, but that rtv does look like crap. I'm pretty sure I error on the side of too much rtv, but we'll see when I pull the pan. The 2 previous times I pulled the pan with rtv as the only sealer, I had good coverage.

Thinking I might have leakage past the rings causing excess pressure in the crankcase, I hooked up a vacuum/ pressure gauge to the valve cover and went for a spin. At idle the needle moved just into the vacuum side of zero, and maxed out at 1 inch of vacuum at full throttle. Cylinder pressure and leakage also checked out ok.

I'm gonna pull the pan and rear main seal, check the run out on the rear main area of the crank, and go from there.

Hey Gary, what do I owe you for stealing your thread?

I've got about as big a block as I'm going to get, --- on the inside. No more engine swaps in the near future, I hope. Working on trans swap.    Big block refers to city block instead of neighbor hood block. Nobody drives there Mustang around a little block.

After resting a really painful lower back for a couple of weeks, I removed the oil pan today. Kinda hard to blame a rear seal leak with RTV applied like this. MS was spot on about the RTV filling the grove on the main cap.  I'm gonna have to give my head mechanic a woopin'.
