AOD crossmember won’t fit . One side frame hole lines up, and other doesn’t at all !
Anyone else have this issue?
The bell housing is bolted in with two bolts , torque converter is lined up correctly too! No issues there
Am I gonna need to make holes there ? What am I doing wrong there?
65 mustang 302 motor

I don't know that you're doing anything wrong. Could be the part, could be the car!!!
How bad is "not at all"? Does that mean there is no part of the holes lining up?
I know it's two different cars and transmissions, but my cross member had elongated holes on one side and I still needed to use a tapered punch to line it up on the elongated side. If one side is not elongated, you may want to go ahead and do that.
Did you test fit the cross member prior to transmission install?? It would be a good determination that the problem stems from interference with the transmission if it fit before.
Bolts from tranny to block should be snug to tight and I would have all of them installed. Converter shouldn't matter at this point. I would jack the transmission up into the tunnel at far as possible to create some working room. Then continue the battle with the cross member.
Good luck Gaba.

Pics brother, we need pics. I've forgotten half the parts you're using.

It sounds like you have a California Pony Parts crossmember. They were incorrectly designed so the one side was 1/2 bolt diameter away from fitting anything. Slot the holes horizontally in the crrossmember on both sides and you should be able to get it to bolt up. It is not anything that YOU did wrong.

wow! you are a wealth of info.. Thank you!
Yes it is a California Pony Cars crossmember..
I will confirm with a pic , but yes, its a half bolt on both sides, or full bolt on one side and tiny bitty hole showing on another
Good to know that for once I was not the issue heehee

Rat-tail file. Slow butt (TS&T) accurate. Or, if you have to do it to the installed X-member or are in a big hurry a carbide bit in a die grinder. But be careful, they tend to get pretty wild when you stick them into a hole that ain't much bigger that their diameter.
And, I know I don't need to mention this to you, Gaba....WEAR SAFETY GLASES!!!

Milling machine .... you can use mine .... bring it down here. :-)

Use a drill bit nearly the same size as the hole, then..........go to waller'in it out!
side-to-side...then in-and-out...

I use rotary carbide burrs in a air or electric die grinder.

I dont remember what year your car is, but When I put my AOD in I was looking for a cross member. The one I liked the design of wasnt available for a 65. I called the manufacturer and talked to the guy who designed this particular member. He said they quit making them for a 65 because they had too many issues with them not fitting. Seems there was too much variance between 2 different 65 mustangs. Not saying this is your issue but just sharing my experiences

Neither, go with a 408 and a 6sally6 recommended cam! Of course you will have to change a few other things down line.

You should start a thread for this.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
